Heart and Souls (1993) {Mill Creek Entertainment Retro VHS Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

To the people now in this generation Robert Downy Jr. is Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and probably always will be. But he had a career in his early years that many younger film fans may be totally unaware of.

In 1993 he starred in a comedy/drama with a pretty impressive supporting cast. The film was entitled Heart and Souls. Now the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment have released this film as part of their Retro VHS Blu-ray collection. And to say I am excited about this release is an understatement.

After a fatal bus crash passengers Harrison (Charles Grodin), Penny (Alfre Woodard), Julia (Kyra Sedgwick) and Milo (Tom Sizemore) become "guardian ghosts" to the child born at the moment of their deaths. Thomas grows up to be a businessman (Robert Downey Jr.) who believes his childhood playmates were just his imagination. But in order for them to move on, they must resolve their unfinished business and they need Thomas' help to do so.

Heart and Souls is a delightfully pleasant cinematic experience. The story is full of heart and soul. The film is a drama with a touch of comedy. The direction of Ron Underwood is spectacular and the cast is stupendous. It is good to note there film is a PG-13 rated film so there is some adult situations and language, nothing terrible but something parents should be aware of.

The film has been transferred in 1080p in widescreen 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The audio is an English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Watching this film on this Blu-ray is a pleasure the picture and sound is crisp and clean, the colors are vibrant.

Now a beautiful looking copy of this film is not where this Blu-ray ends. Mill Creek Entertainment added some cool bonuses to this disc. Take a look at what is included.

* Driven By Destiny: Making Heart and Souls: A near 40 minute featurette with director/producer Ron Underwood.

* Writing Heart and Souls: A 12 minute audio interview with co-writer S.S. Wilson.

* Designing Heart and Souls: A 3 minute audio interview, production designer John Muto.

I really enjoyed the film and the bonuses on this Blu-ray disc. But for me the Retro VHS style slip cover is one of the coolest features. Mill Creek Entertainment's Retro VHS line is defiantly one of my favorites. I highly recommend them for physical media fans.
