Sheena (1984)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

The 80's was an excellent time. For me I was a small kid and I spent my days watching, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Voltron, He-man and more. I was too young to watch many of the 80's movies. But now that I am an adult I can see the films I missed as a child.

One such film I never saw as a kid was Sheena Queen of the Jungle. Originally a comic book published primarily by Fiction House. In 1984 it was brought to the big screen. Now for the first time ever you can bring it home on special retro VHS version blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment.

The film starts with geologists Philip and Betsy Ames investigating rumors of a mystical "healing earth" whose powers are said to flow forth from the sacred Gudjara Mountain. While there they are killed in a cave-in, leaving their young daughter Janet an orphan. For the Zambouli tribe They believe she is the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy.

The young girl is raised by their shaman and taught to her telepathically communication with animals. The girl grows up to be Sheena, Queen of the Jungle (Tanya Roberts). While she may want to live in peace she must spring into action to save the Zambouli from annihilation by Prince Otwani, who wants the precious metal under the natives' land. She is aided by a reporter named Vic Casey (Ted Wass) who falls for her charms.

Anyone who goes in to watch this film knows your not watching Citizen Kane here. This is a B-movie adventure. The production and acting is very good for B-movie. I believe fans of The Beastmaster will love this adventure. Tanya Roberts is believable lin the role of Sheena. The music is spectacular, a perfect accompaniment.

Now it is good to note this film is not for the kids. I would even caution parents about letting the teens watch this one. While it was rated PG back in the day, someone dropped the ball on that big time, this should be PG-13 at least. There is a lot of violence, some profanity and some nudity.

As for this blu-ray release the film is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format and in dts-HD master audio. The colors are dazzling. The jungle's luscious greens and the golden sand pop off the screen. The sound of the explosions take you right in the middle of the action.

As for bonus features there is only the option of English Subtitles which is a nice option for the hearing impaired. Now for fans of Sheena this film in HD is going to be enough to warrant a purchase, but what makes this even more of an must add is the retro part. A slipcover that looks like an old VHS tape. This looks absolutely amazing on the shelf.

I love what Mill Creek Entertainment is doing with these Retro releases. They are a lot of fun to collect and make good conversation starters for movie fans.

So if you love 80s films as much as I do. This Retro VHS version blu-ray of Sheena is a must own!
