Mill Creek Entertainment has released a series of retro VHS cover blu-rays. The first one we are going to look at is in this series of reviews is the 1983 Sci-fi classic Krull!
Sci-fi films are my favorite genre of movie entertainment! They take us to places we never will be able to go! The 1983 British-American heroic fantasy-science fiction film Krull follows Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) as he sets out on a dangerous journey to rescue his young bride who is held captive by a creature called the Beast. If that isn’t enough along the way he must find a weapon called the glave, fight slayers and alien beings under the Beast’s command. Will Colwyn triumph and rescue the Princess? You’ll have to watch the film to find out!
Let's face facts here this film was more or less an attempt to cash in on all the hype of
Star Wars. But Krull has an amazing charm all it's own. The acting is very good, but the story is lacking a cohesiveness! Ken Marshall is amazing and look for a supporting role by a young Liam Neeson!
The action is typical 80s sci-fi fare, but the special effects are great and even look great now, in my opinion! Than there is the masterful score composed by James Horner. After watching the film you'll be humming the soundtrack!
I guess truth be told Krull is one of those films you either love or hate. As far as this blu-ray release goes, the film transfer is beautiful. It's presented in 2.40:1 widescreen format with DTS-HD Master audio 5.1.
Now what makes this blu-ray even more of a must add to any sci-fi film lovers collection is the retro slip cover. The slip looks just like an old VHS tape cover with the VHS tape halfway out of the cover. I love the added effect on the slip of the stickers 'Sci-fi' and 'Warning this video cassette will MELT if left in the car or in the sun'. This is exactly the kind of stuff we saw renting videos back in the day! This collection is a retro movie fans dream come true.
Now this blu-ray has the HD copy of the film! There are no bonus features! Now for some people this would be a horrible disappointment! For me this is just what we went to the video stores and rented! He didn't get all kind of bonus feature we got the film!
So if you remember fondly the movie Krull and you want to relive your childhood all over again! I highly recommend this Retro VHS version of Krull on Blu-ray. It can be purchased now at Walmart and will be available for purchase everywhere Mid-January 2019. So make plans now to add this sci-fi classic to your collection!
