Kull the Conqueror (1997) {Retro VHS Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Arnold Schwarzenegger played the iconic character Conan in two films. Producers wanted to continue the success of the movies with one more film. So Conan the Conqueror was written, but Arnold refused to reprise the role.

So instead of scraping the whole thing that decided to change the name to Kull the Conqueror and they needed someone who could truly live the part of a mythical character, so who better than one that just happened to be playing Hercules on TV. Enter Kevin Sorbo.

Mill Creek Entertainment line of Retro VHS Blu-rays have really been some of my favorite releases from any company. Kull The Conqueror is just the kind of film people would rent at those VHS tape stores. So Mill Creek Entertainment is giving this cult action/adventure classic a perfect retro

After five years as a slave, warrior Kull (Kevin Sorbo) travels to the shores of the fantastical kingdom of Valusia, where he slays mad King Borna (Terry O’Neill). Inheriting the crown, Kull begins to bring freedom and tolerance to Valusia, which displeases Gen. Taligaro (Thomas Ian Griffith) and the royal court’s advisers. Determined to unseat Kull, Taligaro has a wizard resurrect the witch Akivasha (Tia Carrere) to seduce and destroy the new monarch.

This film is not a film that is on a par with the Conan films, lets be honest. But that does not mean that this film is not entertaining. Everyone put their all into this film and the set design and costumes and fight scenes are very well done. Than throw in the pulse pounding soundtrack of Joel Goldsmith, and you got one awesome adventure. Noe this film is
cheesy all the way around, but call me crazy I love the cheesiness of this film.

Kull the Conqueror has been transferred to Blu-ray thanks to Mill Creek Entertainment. The film is is 1080p and presented in the original 2.35 widescreen format. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. The picture quality in this transfer is nice. The colors are great and picture is crisp, while the audio is clear as a bell.

Now a nice transfer is not the end of this Blu-ray release, not by a long shot. There is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, a minute long trailer is included. But probably the greatest bonus feature in this release is the slip cover. T
he VHS-Style slipcover is complete different artwork than found on the actual Blu-ray case itself.

This Blu-ray is a time machine on a shelf. Every time I see it it takes me back to to my early childhood with my parents going to the video store and renting videos. I can not thank Mill Creek Entertainment enough for this loving tribute to yesteryear.
