The next Retro VHS Blu-ray is 1988's Romantic Comedy Vibes starring Jeff Goldblum and 80's rocker Cyndi Lauper. Let's take a look at what this film looks like.
Vibes follows psychics Sylvia Pickel (Lauper) and Nick Deezy (Goldblum) who are hired by Harry Buscafusco (Peter Falk) to find an ancient treasure in South America. As they travel through Ecuador, using their supernatural skills instead of leading them to the treasure they get into all kinds of trouble but also find love. As an ancient evil power is unleashed, Sylvia and Nick must join psychic forces to save the world.
Vibes is a solid romantic comedy! Lauper and Goldblum have great chemistry. Along with Peter Falk we get a great supporting cast Julian Sands, Steve Buscemi and Karen Akers. Everyone works so well together. The direction of Ken Kwapis really reigns things in to give every scene purpose.
Vibes is not a perfect film, not at all. It's not like it was Academy award-worthy, but it is a good little escapism film. Vibes is funny, romantic, off-the-wall, quirky, and has some action thrown in more good measure. There is something to like in this film for all film fans.
Now for the Blu-ray release. The film hs been transferred in the original widescreen format in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The Audio is DTS 2.0. The picture quality is very good. The details in the film are highly defined and the audio is clear. It is a masterful job in the transfer. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, which is always a nice bonus.
I really enjoyed my time watching Lauper and Goldblum. It makes me wish they would have teamed up again for another film together. But what makes this release even more cool to me is the retro slipcover. It looks like something you would have got off the shelf at the mom and pops video store back in the day.
I give Mill Creek Entertainment A rating with these Retro VHS slipcovers. They are the best on the market, in my opinion. Bar none. And Vibes is no different! For people who have that nostalgia for the old days of VHS but love the picture quality of Blu-ray this is truly the best of both worlds.
