Double Team (1997)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In the 90's Jean-Claude Van Damme was taking the action movies by storm and a polarizing character in the world for better or worse was the NBA bad boy Dennis Rodman. So what would happen if they joined forces? We found out in Double Team.

Now the great folks at Mill Creek Entertainment has released this 90's action thriller on Retro VHS Blu-ray. Let's take a look at this release.

A CIA agent Jack Quinn (Van Damme) is interned for failing a mission to kill an international terrorist. Escaping from his island exile, he teams up with the flamboyant arms dealer Yaz (Rodman) and sets out to find the terrorist Stavros (Mickey Rourke) and rescue the Quinn's wife and son.

While some might say this film is not Van Damme's best film, I actually enjoyed it more that most of his films. I don't know if it's because of the absurdity of Rodman in a Van Damme film. It was just a lot of fun for me.

I think
Tsui Hark's stylistic direction brings a very interesting look to this strange combo of Van Damme and Rodman. The action sequences are awesome and kept me on the edge of my seat.

As for this blu-ray release the film is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format and the audio is dts-HD master 2.0 soundtrack. There is also an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired.

The film looks very good on the HD television. The colors of Rodman's ever changing hair color pops right off the screen. The picture looks stunningly clean. Then the audio is crisp and clean and there is no sign of hiss or pops.

Now this release really shines because of the cool Retro VHS slipcover, in my opinion. I been totally enjoying these nostalgic retro VHS releases.
Some of you may remember as a child going to the video store and you got the movie and that was it. This reminds me of that experience.

If you love these Retro VHS blu-rays. If your a fan of Van Damme or Rodman than Double Team is an absolute must own! Head over to www.Millcreekent.com today.
