Blu-ray Review: Opportunity Knocks

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Dana Carvey is known for his characters such as, The church lady and Garth Algar. But he also did amazing impressions of Ross Perot and George Bush during his time on Saturday Night Live.

His success on SNL lead to a leading role in comedy film Opportunity Knocks. Now the great folks at Mill Creek Entertainment is releasing this film on Retro VHS Blu-ray. Let's take a look at this release.

Eddie (Dana Carvey) is a con artist whose schemes usually disgusing himself and stealing TVs. But when he learns that a large home he is robbing is to be free for a few months, he decides to move in. But when businessman Milt drops by, and thinks Eddie is the yuppie house-sitter (who never showed up) Eddie sees s golden opportunity and assumes the identity of the no show house-sitter. Impressed with Eddie, Milt gives him a job and introduces him to his beautiful daughter, Annie (Julia Campbell), and Eddie tries to keep up the charade.

Opportunity Knocks is a well written screenplay. Dana Carvey is his hilarious self in this film. The direction of Donald Petrie is a masterful job. He is best known for his films, Grumpy Old Men, Miss Congeniality and How to lose a guy in 10 days.

As for this Blu-ray release the film is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen format and the audio is DTS-HD master 2.0 soundtrack. There is also an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired. As for bonus features there is a trailer and 27 minutes of deleted scenes.

The film looks very good on the HD television. The colors are vibrant and there is very little sign of grain. The audio is crisp and clean and there is no sign of hiss or pops.

But for me the star of this release is the ultra cool Retro VHS slipcover. I absolutely love Mill Creek's retro slipcovers. They are so awesome. They are nostalgic and so collectable.
