No Mercy (1986) {Retro VHS Style Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Mill Creek Entertainment has been releasing rounds of Retro VHS Style Blu-rays. Some of Classic Cinema Magazine's favorites so far have been Roxanne, Neighbours, The Legend of Billie Jean, Krull, Who's Harry Crumb and Last Action Hero.

This Blu-ray line is a nostalgic trip down memory lane. In 1986 Kim Basinger and Richard Gere two Hollywood heavyweights came together to bring us a thrilling, dramatic adventure, entitled No Mercy. This is the next film to get a Retro release.

The film follows Eddie Jilette a Chicago cop on a trail to avenge his partner's murder. He tracks the killers to New Orleans. Eddie travels through the Louisiana bayous with Michel Duval, the Cajun mistress of a murderous crime lord who plans to destroy Eddie before he can avenge his partner.

No Mercy is a typical 80's adventure. There is nothing really unexpected in this film. It is pretty predictable. The direction is good and the acting of Kim Basinger and Richard is good, as can be expected from these two. But this is an R rated release so there is a lot of profanity, violence and sexual content. While I can't say this was my favorite Gere/Basinger film, no doubt some love it.

Now for the blu-ray release itself. The film is presented in it's original 1.85:1 widescreen format and in English 2.0 DTS-HD Master audio. There is some imperfections in the picture, but they are very minor. Nothing that should take away from the viewing of this. As for bonus features there is English subtitles for the hearing impaired.

The real star of this release is the slipcover that looks like an old VHS tape. It has that worn look and for people who remember going to the video stores and picking up VHS tapes to rent, this is nostalgia. Than there is different artwork blu-ray case as well! For people like me who love the different style artwork this is awesome.

To me there is something so cool about these retro slipcovers. It takes me back to a simpler time. A time when people went to the video store and rent movies for a night at home. Long before the internet and streaming change everything. Many companies are releasing these retro VHS style slipcovers but I have to say Mill Creek is doing the best job.

So if your a fan retro VHS Blu-rays. King Basinger or Richard Gere. You may want to check out No Mercy from Mill Creek Entertainment.
