Renegade (1989) {Retro VHS Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Many film fans have a soft spot in their hearts for the VHS tapes and those old video rental store. Mill Creek Entertainment have been giving films fans the best of both worlds with their line-up of Retro VHS style Blu-rays.

The latest that we had got the chance to review were Kull the Conqueror and Splitting Heirs. Now it is time for yet another cult classic to get a chance to shine on Retro VHS Blu-ray. This time it is 1989's Renegades starring Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Phillips.

The film follows an unconventional undercover cop named Buster McHenry (Sutherland) as he tries to infiltrate a gang of criminals by joining in a jewelry heist. The only problem is the attempt fails, the gang manages to steal a rare weapon from a nearby American Indian exhibit. Deserted by the gang and hunted by the police, McHenry reluctantly joins forces with Hank Storm (Phillips), an Indian who is on a mission to recover the sacred lance. Their adventure will find them one one exciting event after another.

Renegades has a lot of action, adventure and a lot of charm to it, but the car chase lasted a total of 7 minutes which can feel a bit long. While I like the team-up of
Sutherland and Phillips, they seemed to have better chemistry in the movie Young Guns than here. I must say that one thing that seemed so strange to me in this film was Jami Gertz character of Barbara. Her character felt completely unnecessary to the plot of the film. I still have no clue why she was there.

This film is not for the entire family, not by a long shot. This films was rated R and while there was no nudity and just an implied sexual scene only. There is a fair amount of violence and a tremendous amount of adult language. So viewer be aware.

Mill Creek Entertainment has transferred in 1080p in widescreen 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a DTS-HD Master Audio. Looking at this Blu-ray film transfer the colors are vibrant and the picture is crisp. It really does look nice in HD.

As for special features in this release, Mill Creek added the Theatrical Trailer and English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. But as with all these releases what really makes this release so cool is the Retro VHS Style Slip cover.
