Roxanne (Retro VHS style Blu-ray)

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

In the '80s Steve Martin was box office. Maybe his films never won academy awards, but people couldn't get enough of his brand of comedy. In 1987 He took his unique brand to a classic tale in Roxanne.

Now the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment are giving this Steve Martin classic a Blu-ray release. But not just any Blu-ray release. It's getting retro VHS style release. Let's take a look.

The film takes place in the little resort town of Nelson, Washington. Everyone seems to love the Fire Chief C.D. Bales (Martin). There is one problem is overly sensitive about his remarkably long nose. When a beautiful, intelligent astronomer, named Roxanne comes to town to study a comet., C. D. is smitten, while she is smitten with one of his firemen, Chris. Chris not as eloquent as C.D. convinces him to ghost-write a letter to Roxanne.

OK, so Roxanne is not Steve Martin's greatest film. What is? Well, that is up for debate! But this is a very sweet and charming tale. Steve Martin is really good and there is great performances by Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall and Fred Willard.

It is good to note that this film does have quite a good chunk of adult language in it for a PG-rated film! There is also a lengthy scene of Roxanne running around trying to hide in the bushes as she got locked out of her house naked. Nothing overly graphic, but it is a scene to be aware of. So this film is by no means for the whole family here. Adults will enjoy this film!

Steve is his usual funny self but in a toned-down kind of way. Which I find refreshing! The acting of everyone is very good. The story is based on the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand and was very well adapted for the modern audience of 1987.

As for this Blu-ray release the film is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format and the audio is DTS-HD master 5.1 soundtrack. There is also an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired. There are no bonus features. But as I have said before when going to the video store you rented a tape and watched the movie! That's what this feels like to me the experience of going to the video store and getting a movie!

The film looks very good on the HD television. The colors are vibrant and there is a little sign of grain, but nothing that will take away from the enjoyment of this film. In fact, the grain I feel lends to the nostalgia of this '80s film. The audio is crisp and clean and there is no sign of hiss or pops.

W
hat makes this a must-own release for me is the ultra-cool Retro VHS slipcover. I love what Mill Creek Entertainment is doing with their retro slipcovers. There are a lot of companies making these retro slipcover Blu-rays. But Mill Creek is giving us the real video store VHS artwork with the VHS tape. They are so awesome. They are nostalgic and so collectible.

Now if perchance you are not a fan of these retro VHS slipcovers, and there are some of you out there! The inside artwork is modern, and still very cool, so you don't have to keep the slip if you don't want it!

So if you're a fan of Steve Martin or '80s comedies. This retro VHS version Blu-ray of Roxanne is a must-own! Head over to www.Millcreekent.com today.
