Witchtrap (1989) MVD Rewind Collection Blu-ray Review

horror, movie, bluray Witchtrap,
In the 1980s film fans would go to the video stores like Blockbuster and rent movies. Some of the most popular movies among teenagers and young adults were the low budget horror films. Those film fans have so much love for those retro VHS style releases and MVD Rewind Collection have been giving physical media fans so many great releases to add to their collections.

As part of the MVD Rewind Collection we have seen such cult classics as Mindgames, Double Impact, My Samurai, The Point, Ski Patrol, Lair's Moon, The Last American Virgin, Men at Work, and L.A. Wars. Now the newest cult film to receive a Blu-ray release from MVD Rewind is 1989's Witchtrap.

In the attic, we have a secret sacrificial altar where the former owner, Avery Lauter (J. P. Luebsen, Witchboard) was found dead. His heart brutally cut from his body... his restless spirit rumored to still be wandering these halls.

In the living room, we find a team of experts (among them,WITCHBOARD'sJames Quinn and Judy Tatum) assembled here at the request of Avery's sole heir and nephew Devon Lauter (director Kevin Tenney himself), along with the sexy Ms. Ginger Kowowski (Linnea Quigley, The Return of the Living Dead) who have no inkling as to the dangers that are about to befall them as they attempt to trap the evil spectre.

The film has a good concept and acting is okay. The part where the film may suffer a bit is in the special effects. Of course when you have a low budget that is going to be a problem. But in this day and age there is a huge fanbase that love the cheesy effects and low budget horror films. I think this may be one of those films that is the category of "So Bad It's Good!"

Now just for audience members that may want to known before going into this film. There is a pretty good amount of gore and violence, a fair amount of profanity and there is a couple short scenes of nudity. So viewer discretion is advised.

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in i
ts original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is an English LPCM 2.0 Mono. There is also the option for English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Now the really awesome thing about this new transfer is that it features the 2016

scan and restored 2K version from the 35mm Interpositive. This restoration looks and sounds really great. The colors are bright and the picture is crisp, the audio is clear. There is only a couple of minor artifacts. But an impressive looking transfer is not all this release has going for it! MVD loaded this release with bonus features. Take a look at what is included.

From a really insightful commentary to amazing interviews, a photo gallery, 2 kinds of artwork, a mini-poster. WOW! But I think one of the coolest bonuses in this release is the VHS Version of the film. This is no doubt how many people first saw this film. What an amazing bonus! MVD really are fans of films just like all of us!

So while the film may not be a 4 star flick, this Blu-ray release truly is! All the bonuses make up for what the film is lacking! So if you love 80s low budget horror this new Blu-ray release of Witchtrap is going to be right up your alley. Head over to Amazon and order your copy.

4 out of 4 Film Reels (4 being the best) the MVD Rewind Blu-ray of Witchtrap receives....
