Radiance Films has been releasing some super deluxe Blu-ray releases. They have taken many foreign films, most of which the United States would never get to see on physical media and made them available to us in America thanks to distributor MVD Visual.The latest Blu-ray is an Italian film from legendary director Antonio Pietrangeli's 1964 film The Magnificent Cuckold. Just a short 5 years after this film's release, he would tragically drown while shooting his final film. So this is one of his final films not released in a super deluxe edition Blu-ray.
Synopsis: A happily married businessman (Ugo Tognazzi, La Cage aux Folles) succumbs to the advances of one of his less square, more open-minded female friends. His eyes now open to the rampant adultery among his high-society acquaintances, he is amazed at the ease with which they lie to their loved ones. Soon, he begins to suspect his loving wife (Claudia Cardinale, Fitzcarraldo) of infidelity - even as she guesses nothing of his own extramarital affair.
Okay, now to be honest, this film was not my cup of tea. But I can appreciate the quality of filmmaking here. Antonio Pietrangeli was a master of shooting a beautiful film. For people who love this film this new Blu-ray edition is going to be a dream come true.
Radiance Films has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is an uncompressed Italian-language mono PCM track. There is also a newly improved English subtitle translation. This Blu-ray transfer comes from a 4K restoration of the film from the original camera negative by the Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Compass Film and Studio Cine.
This new 4K restoration brings real depth and beauty to the black-and-white picture. The film looks sharp as a tack, and I didn't see any damage to the print when viewing it. Now, in addition to a nice restoration. Radiance Films added some nice bonus features. Take a look at what is included.
