Ken Burns is a master filmmaker. He really excels at documentaries. We recently reviewed his epic 4 part documentary series about one of the greatest boxers/entertainers of all time, Muhammad Ali, which was released on Blu-ray. In 2023, Ken Burns brought to film the spirit of a people and the story of resilience with The American Buffalo. Now, PBS has released this amazing documentary about Indigenous people and the amazing creature on a 2-disc Blu-ray set.
Synopsis: The dramatic story of America's national mammal, which sustained the lives of Native people for untold generations, being driven to the brink of extinction, before an unlikely collection of people rescues it from disappearing forever.
This is a simply fascinating documentary series. The American Buffalo could have gone the way of the dinosaur, becoming extinct before it was rescued. Ken Burns uses a combination of archival material, wildlife footage, and Indigenous voices recordings to bring this story to life.
Running a mere 4 hours, this documentary series does a wonderful job tracking the historical steps of this magnificent creature. These films have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and are presented in widescreen format. The audio options are an English 5.1 surround sound and a Spanish 2.0 track. There is also the option for subtitles in English and Spanish.
The Blu-ray transfer of this entire documentary series is wonderfully crisp and clean. There are no signs of digital artifacts or audio anomalies. In addition to a wonderful Blu-ray transfer, PBS added as a special bonus the short film by Julianna Brannum. The film follows Jason Baldes, a Shoshone who leads bison to Indigenous communities.
