Queen of the Ring Blu-ray Review | Inspiring Wrestling Drama Based on a True Story

For a long time, wrestling was something you didn't tell everyone you watched. Unless you had friends who watched it too. Over the years, it has become okay to enjoy the sports entertainment spectacle!

Even more recently, we have seen movies about these larger-than-life characters. We have seen The Claw about the Wrestler Baron Von Raschke and The Iron Claw about the life and tragedy of the famed Von Erich family.

Now it is time for a new biographical film. And this time it's for a female superstar. The first million-dollar female wrestler. The film is entitled 'Queen of the Ring'.

Synopsis:An extraordinary, true-life tale that follows Mildred Burke (Emily Bett Rickards, Arrow) the legendary professional wrestler and single mom who defied incredible odds to become the first million-dollar female athlete and longest reigning champion at a time when the sport was banned across most of America.

In 2009, Jeff Leen published a Mildred Burke biography entitled 'The Queen of the Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making of an American Legend'. That book is an inspiration for this film.

Queen of the Ring is a raw and real look at the life and the times of a strong female who just happened to be a wrestler in a time when it was not looked on in a positive light. While not a perfect film. There are times the film drags a bit and there is a good chunk of adult content so this is not a family film by any stretch of the imagination.

Emily Bett Rickards really became Mildred Burke. She was spectacular, as was the rest of the cast, which included Josh Lucas, Tyler Posey, Francesca Eastwood, Deborah Ann Woll, Cara Buono, and Walton Goggins in supporting roles.

Kino Lorber has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio tracks to choose from: an English 5.1 track and an English 2.0 track. There is also the option of English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

* Deleted Scenes
* Cast Interviews
* Theatrical Trailer

It's nice to see that Kino Lorber added deleted scenes and interviews. It would have been nice to see an audio commentary with the writer and director, Ash Avildsen. Also, it might have been nice to see a featurette with wrestling historians talking about a women's revolution with Mildred Burke, before the WWE Women's Revolution. But still to see interviews and deleted scenes is a great addition to this release.

If you are a fan of sports biographies, wrestling movies or just real-life accounts, Queen of the Ring is definitely a film you will want to check out! And if you're a physical media fan like me, the best way to see this film is on this Kino Lorber Blu-ray. Head over to Kino Lorber or Amazon and order your copy today.
