For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) – KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review: A Timeless Hemingway Epic Restored

Ernest Hemingway's stories have made their way to the theaters for years. There have been many great film adaptions of his stories to cinema. One of the best is 1943's For Whom The bell tolls. This film could have easily won the best picture Oscar if it was any other year than 1943.

This film is now 82 years old! That is just so hard to believe. Now Kino Lorber under the KL Studio Classics label have taken a newly restored 4k print and released this classic drama on Blu-ray. Now cinephiles can enjoy this classic in the best quality ever!

Synopsis: The story follows expatriate American demolition expert Robert Jordan (Cooper) who aids anti-fascist freedom fighters of Spain. Assisting him is a band of warriors including the strong-willed Pilar (Katina Paxinou in an Academy Award®-winning performance), the dangerously undependable Pablo (Akim Tamiroff, The General Died at Dawn) and the lovely, innocent Maria (Bergman). As danger mounts, Robert and Maria develop a closeness that blossoms into one of the silver screen’s greatest love stories.

Hemingway knew how to write an emotionally charged story. And here director Sam Wood brings that story to life in an emotional rollercoaster of a cinematic experience. Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman are tremendous on screen together. The film runs close to three hours! But fear not the film has a nice pacing and you won't even feel it's that long.

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in the original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 20. And there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Now as we wrote earlier this isn't just any transfer comes from a Brand-New HD Master - From a 4K Scan of the UCLA Film Elements. I have seen this film before, and the print was okay. Watching this film now on this new Blu-ray is a pleasure. The quality of this new 4K scan brings this film to life!

Now in addition to this new wonderful looking 4k scan. Kino Lorber added some nice bonus features to this Blu-ray released. Take a look at what is included.

• The Roadshow Edition with Overture and Intermission
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian David Del Valle and Film Historian/Producer Dan Marino
• Theatrical Trailer

A roadshow edition refers to where a film is shown in a small number of theaters in major cities before it would be released to a wider audience. These formats included overtures, intermission and even an extended runtime. Now I think it is so cool that Kino Lorber added the bonus of the Roadshow overture and intermission. That is so cool! Plus the bonus of a wonderful commentary. Great Stuff!

If you love classic Hollywood movies as much as I do this 1943 classic drama is a must have for your collection. And if you want the best quality release, look no further than Kino Lorber's Blu-ray. head over to
