In the 1970s, crime dramas were all the rage. TV and movies were filled with these kinds of escapes. Maybe it was the fashion (bellbottoms) and the slang (can you dig it). But there is no denying people loved their crime dramas... and still do to this day.
Academy Award-nominated director Gus Van Sant has taken a trip in a time machine to bring us his next film. Set in the 70s it is a crime drama that has a screen legend in it. The film is entitled Dead Man's Wire and it is now on Blu-ray for physical media fans to purchase.
Synopsis: In February 1977, Indianapolis car salesman Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgard) was behind on his loan for the lot he'd unsuccessfully sought to develop. So, he got a sit-down with mortgage broker Richard Hall (Dacre Montgomery)-looped a wire around Hall's neck, with the other end on the trigger of a 12-gauge-and proceeded to drag the local authorities and media into a 63-hour standoff over his grievance.
Gus Van Sant directs this crime drama. It starts out at a breakneck speed, but then it starts to sputter and slow up. This is extremely disappointing, as this could have been a major action-packed drama that could keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
The acting is really good. The cast is led by Bill Skarsgard and supported by Cary Elwes, Colman Domingo, Kelly Lynch, and Al Pacino. If the story had kept its fast pace throughout the film, it would have been one exciting piece of cinema. But it is still good.
Dead Man's Wire has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The Blu-ray transfer of Dead Man's Wire is really nice. The picture is crisp and clean; there are no signs of digital artifacts or audio anomalies. But as for bonus features, well, that is where this release fails. There are no bonus features on this disc. That is a shame. Physical media fans love their bonuses. An audio commentary or interviews would have been a nice addition.
All in all, if you love 70s crime dramas, Dead Man's Hand is a nice nostalgic look back at an almost forgotten era. Head over to Amazon and order your copy of this Blu-ray today.
