Double The Romance: Blu-ray Review

A double feature Blu-ray gives you so much bang for your buck. Anytime I get 2 films for the price of one you know I'm a happy camper. Well, Mill Creek Entertainment have been releasing double feature Blu-ray for quite a while.

We have enjoyed Blu-rays featuring Joan Crawford, Kirsten DunstMartin Short, Richard Pryor, George ClooneyJoaquin Phoenix and a Director's Spotlight: Sydney Pollack
We have also seen genre double feature Blu-ray like the The Biblical set, Double Danger, Faith Double Feature, Anime Double Feature, MVP 1 & 2.

Now Mill Creek Entertainment are releasing another epic double feature Blu-ray. This time around they are giving us an escape to a little romance, with Evening and Once Around.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Once Around (1991)
Jilted by her boyfriend, Renata, the oldest daughter of a close-knit Italian American family, falls in love with Sam, an abrasive and forcefully charming businessman. But neither her spirited sister, her down-to-earth father, or her supportive mother can tolerate Sam's often obnoxious intrusion into their family circle. Aggressive and overwhelmingly generous, Sam proceeds - with only the best intentions - to disrupt and nearly demolish Renata's family. Love, humor and forgiveness go once more around as the Bellas try to balance Renata's happiness with their family's survival in this funny and often touching story. ***

Evening (2007)
As Ann reflects on one beautiful and life-changing weekend with the one true love of her life, her daughters come to their own understanding about the power of the past and the unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters, family, and the loves of their lives. ***

Once Around and Evening are rated R and PG-13 respectively. So there is a good amount of adult language and situations, suggestive content. So these films are for adults. But these film are filled with great performances by Claire Danes, Toni Collette, Vanessa Redgrave, Patrick Wilson, Meryl Streep | Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, Danny Aiello, Hugh Dancy, Natasha Richardson, Glenn Close, Barry Bostwick | Laura San Giacomo, Gena Rowlands and Roxanne Hart.

The films feature great dialogue from writers Jeffrey Sharp, Griffin Dunne and Amy Robinson and tremendous direction from Lajos Koltai and Lasse Hallström. These are nice little Romance films. But to be honest they are far from the best you will see!

These two films have been transferred to one Blu-ray disc. They are presented in 1080p Evening is in 2.40:1 aspect ratio and Once Around is in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio soundtracks are DTS-HD Master audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Now you might think two 2 hour films on one disc. The quality will suffer. Now while they are not UltraHD quality, I was extremely impressed with how good they look. The skin tones are perfect and the colors are nice with nor discoloration. The picture transfer is crisp and clean and the audio is clear with Now sound anomalies.

I love when Mill Creek Entertainment puts two films on one Blu-ray. It makes for a really nice night of movie viewing. There is no need to change out the disc, just enjoy one film and start the next one. The only thing I wished was that there were some bonus features! That would have been nice, but you really can't beat two films for a minimal price!
