Joaquin Phoenix Double Feature {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Joaquin Phoenix has taken the world by storm and been a huge part of the Academy Awards buzz with his portrayal of Joker. He even garnered a nomination for Best Actor. But what about his earlier film?

He was in many films throughout his career. Gladiator, Walk the Line, Signs, Hotel Rwanda just to name a few. But what about other films? Maybe some not so well known.

Mill Creek Entertainment realizing that there might be some interest in previous films by the actor has given movie fans a chance to see other films by Joaquin Phoenix with a new Blu-ray double feature.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend some time.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Reservation Road (2007) The Lerner Family's lives are turned upside down one night when their son is run down by a car and killed after returning from his cello recital. Ethan Lerner (Phoenix), the father sets out on a mission to get justice for his son.  ***

Return to Paradise (1998) Lewis (Phoenix), Sheriff and Tony are three friends vacationing in Malaysia. After the vacation ends Sheriff and Tony leave to pursue careers, while Lewis stays to work with orangutans. Two years later, Sheriff and Tony learn that Lewis has been arrested for drug possession because of what happened on their vacation. Lewis is now facing a death sentence. Do the friends return to Malaysia or let Lewis die? You'll have to see the film to find out. ***

These two films are gripping human dramas. It is very good to note that these two films have a lot of adult language, some sexual content, violence, and drug use. So these films are not family entertainment. These films are strictly for the adult.

While they may not be the best films Joaquin Phoenix ever did. This Blu-ray release is a good representation of his acting skills. This double feature is a Joaquin Phoenix spotlight, but there are many amazing actors and actresses on this Blu-ray including;
Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Connelly, Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Jada Pinkett Smith, Vera Farmiga, Elle Fanning.

Now for the Blu-ray release itself. These two films are presented in 1080p High definition in their original widescreen format. The audio is in DTS-HD 5.1. These Blu-ray transfers look really good in my opinion. The color palette is beautiful and there is no signs of pixelation. There is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing which is always a nice little feature as well.

Now having two films on a Blu-ray release would be more than enough to make this an addition for some movie fans. Mill Creek Entertainment has added bonus features to this release as well. There is trailers for both films, deleted scenes for the film Reservation Road and a featurette "Looking Back at Reservation Road.

So if your a fan of Joaquin Phoenix or want to see more of this Oscar nominated actor. This Blu-ray is a great way to do that! Head over to MillCreekEnt.com or Amazon.com and order your copy today!
