For many movie fans there seems to be a fascination with serial killers. There have been so many films over the years produced featuring these people. We have seen The Boston Strangler, Silence of the Lambs, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Night of the Hunter, even the Halloween film series. We cannot seem to get enough. And if they are based on real events... it seems it's even better.
Well, Cleopatra Entertainment and MVD Visual have joined forces to bring a 2023 horror film based on real events to home video. Coming to Blu-ray and DVD is Devanny Pinn's The Black Mass, based on the crimes of Ted Bundy.
A true-crime thriller inspired by real events, The Black Mass is set over a 24-hour period in Florida during the winter of 1978. The film follows a serial killer in the days leading up to his final, unhinged rampage, providing a disturbing and terrifying look into the warped psyche of a notorious murderer, as well as the ramifications of his violence for those who fell victim to it, and for those who survived.
I was recently very impressed with the release The Black Phone. The reason I think that film worked so well was the fact that it looked like it was shot in the 1970s. Devanny Pinn known for her role in the film Frost, takes to the director's chair here and brings a real 70s vibe to this film. The cars, clothes hairstyles. The Black Mass really transports you back in time for this film!
Now with most Cleopatra Entertainment films The Black Mass is a gory horror feature. There is a good amount of adult language and extreme sexual content. This is by no means a film for the family. There are several scenes that feel all too real. For this reviewer the content of this film was hard to sit through at times. But some horror hounds love their gore so this will be right up their ally.
Now this film can boast of a pretty impressive cast Nicky Whelan (Hall Pass), Jeremy London (Mallrats), Kathleen Kinmont (Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Jennifer Wenger (Tales of Halloween), Chelsea Gilson (Dolemite is My Name), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Eileen Dietz (David Holzman’s Diary) and Susan Lanier (The Hills Have Eyes).
The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and it presented in widescreen format. There are two audio options, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and a LPCM 2.0. Both of these tracks sound crisp and clean. You can't go wrong with either of them. There are no English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
This Blu-ray transfer is a gorgeous one to say the least. The colors are bright and vibrant, and the audio is clear. I cannot believe how beautiful the 70s look in 2024. Tremendous! But a beautiful transfer is not all that is included in on this Blu-ray! Take a look at the bonus features included on this release!

Now while I didn't find this film an enjoyable experience. That doesn't mean it is not a well-produced horror film. For what it was Devanny Pinn does a great job bringing such realistic violence to this film that it feels a little too real. And I just for horror film fans that's what a lot of them want to see.
If you love ultra-violent serial killer movies The Black Mass maybe a film you will want to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today!
