Run Silent, Run Deep (1953) KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review

When you think of Legendary Hollywood actors two men in the conversation as the best would be Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. In 1953 these two crossed paths for a World War II adventure entitled "Run Silent, Run Deep".

Kino Lorber Studio Classics previously released another Burt Lancaster war picture "The Train" on Blu-ray. Now they are bringing this gripping war thriller Run Silent, Run Deep to Blu-ray!

"Rich" Richardson (Gable) is a hard-driving, dedicated submarine officer with a single-minded purpose - to seek out and smash the Japanese destroyer he believes sunk his former ship. Given a new command, Richardson drills his mento the point of mutiny as he relentlessly trains them for the battle ahead. At last, word comes of the destroyer's position, and disobeying orders, Richardson finally confronts his foe, unaware that an even greater enemy lurks nearby... one that's been targeting him for a watery grave.

The film is based on the novel by Captain Edward L. Beach and screenplay was adapted by John Gay. The film was expertly directed by Robert Wise. He was best known for directing such classics as West Side Story (1961), The Sound of Music (1965), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), The Andromeda Strain (1971) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).

Run Silent, Run Deep is a true tense World War II epic. The film runs just over 90 minutes, which is perfect run time as there is no time for boredom to creep in. Along with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster this film can boast of a tremendous supporting cast that includes, Jack Warden (12 Angry Men), Brad Dexter (The Magnificent Seven) and Don Rickles (Kelly's Heroes).

The film has been transferred to 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

While watching this film I was simply amazed at how great this film looks on Blu-ray. If you didn't know any better, you would think this film was shot in 2024. The film is crisp with no signs of damage to this print that I could see. The audio is clean with no hiss or pops found.

Now in addition to a pristine looking film print, Kino Lorber added some cool bonus features to this Blu-ray. Take a look at what is included on this release.

* Audio Commentary by Filmmaker/Historian Steve Mitchell and Combat Films: American Realism author Steven Jay Rubin
* Theatrical Trailer
* Slipcover and reversable Blu-ray insert

The fascinating audio commentary bring some really interesting facts. You would probably need to listen to this audio commentary twice to digest all the information included there. I absolutely love different kinds of artwork so to me reversible artwork takes this cool release to another level.
