Girl Shy (1924) {Reel Vault DVD Review}

Harold Lloyd was an actor and comedian, who appeared in many silent comedy films during his career. He made nearly 200 comedy films, both silent and "talkies", from 1914 to 1947. Harold Lloyd over the years have influenced many comedians. One of his classics is the 1924's Girl Shy.

The good folks at Reel Vault have been releasing some classic silent films on Blu-ray and DVD recently. For the 100th anniversary of it's initial release, a Blu-ray of the horror classic Nosferatu. Than a DVD release of the Lon Chaney film Monster. Now it's time for a silent classic and what better one than Harold Lloyd's Girl Shy.

Harold Meadows also known as The Poor Boy (Harold Lloyd) is a bashful tailor's apprentice who longs to be an author. Heading for the city to sell his romantic anthology, he encounters Mary Buckingham also known as the Rich Girl (Jobyna Ralston) on a train, and he helps her hide her dog from the conductor. Excited about a budding romance, the Poor Boy goes off to a publisher and gets rejected. Disheartened, he gives up on the Rich Girl. However, when the publisher changes his mind, the Poor Boy tries to rekindle the spark of romance.

This is truly one of Harold Lloyd's best comedies. The script is simplistic, but hilarious. The acting is great and the musical score is spectacular. Most people when they think the silent era comedians they think of Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton. Harold Lloyd gets put on the back burner and that is a shame as he was just as good a comedian as the other two afore mentioned comedy icons.

Reel Vault has transferred this silent comedy classic to DVD. It is presented in its original full screen format and the audio is a Dolby 2.0. For the fact that this film is soon to hit 100 years old, it looks pretty nice! Of course this film is on DVD so it is not in HD (high definition), but this print does look really good! OK so there is some scratches and specks on the print, but let's face it when and if we hit 100 years old, we will all have blemishes as well!

Now as impressed as I am with the quality of this transfer, I must say I have one thing against this release. For the near 100th anniversary I would love to see some bonus features. The DVD menu has just the play movie selection. But granted this is a minor complaint as the movie looks pretty great!

Now as a physical media enthusiast and a classic film fanatic, to see a Harold Lloyd film get a DVD release in this day and age is a nice treat. I am glad to see there are still physical media companies that still give these old classics a chance to shine on home video in an era of streaming!

If you are a fan of the silent era cinema Harold Lloyd's Girl Crazy may just be a DVD you will want to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
