Dashiell Hammett wrote the mystery novel The Thin Man in 1934. People loved the novel so much that it was almost immediately made into a movie. After the film's success it spawned many sequels.
Well, the good folks at Warner Archive have been releasing this movie series on Blu-ray. That last film to be released was Shadow of the Thin Man. Now it is time for the next installment, 1944's The Thin Man goes home.
Needing a vacation Nick Charles (William Powell) and his wife, Nora (Myrna Loy), leave their son Nicky Jr. in boarding school and head to visit Nick's boyhood home of Sycamore Springs. But you can rest assured that no matter where the duo go a mystery is bound to follow. When Nora buys a painting for Nick's birthday and the artist is murdered, it is up to the duo to solve this mystery.
The first four film of The Thin Man film series were directed by W.S. Van Dyke, but sadly he died in 1943 so this installment would have to be directed by someone else. The producers chose Richard Thorpe, he directed my favorite Elvis Presley film Jailhouse Rock.
This installment of The Thin Man series relies a lot on the comedy more than the other films. Now for some people they will love the lighthearted fun, while other film fans may find that a disappointment that the formula that made The Thin Man movies work was not continued. Me personally I thought it was a nice break.
WIlliam and Myrna like always are at their best in this film. But the supporting cast is amazing. Lucile Watson, Gloria DeHaven, Anne Revere, Leon Ames, Donald Meek, Harry Davenport and Edward Brophy.
Warner Archive has transferred this film in 1080p in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono. There is also an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This transfer looks really sharp. There is no signs of damage to this print. It really is a very nice looking transfer.
Warner Archive Collection here recently have been adding some amazing bonuses to their Blu-ray releases and this on is no different. Take a look at what is included on this Blu-ray.
* Theatrical Trailer
* Robert Benchley Comedy Short: Why Daddy?
* Classic cartoon: Screwball Squirrel
I love to see Warner Archive releasing these classics in HD on Blu-ray complete with bonus features. No Thin Man collection is complete without the fifth film in the series. So Classic CInema Plus highly recommends this Blu-ray for Thin Man fans.
