When I say indie horror, what comes to your mind? Last house on the left, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original. Halloween. Well, Indie horror is still a thing! Directors and actors still are striving to put out films that will become cult classics.
Well, John Oak Dalton wrote and directed a film that he hopes will someday become that cult classic. The film is entitled The Girl in the Crawlspace and it has received a DVD release thanks to the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment.
The film follows a young woman named Jill (Erin R. Ryan). After she escaped a crawlspace, her prison cell of a notorious serial killer. Now she tries to work her way back to normal with the help of a therapist, Kristen (Joni Durian). But Kristen's husband a struggling screenwriter uses Jill's nightmare experience as the basis of his new script. As a result, he puts everyone's life in jeopardy.
John Oak Dalton wrote a fairly entertaining script. His direction even though it was his first feature was pretty good. With this being a low budget feature, you have no money for big name actors so the acting is not what you would expect from a big Hollywood blockbuster, and the good dialog was written can suffer a bit.
The film doesn't rely on cheap horror film traps to try to get an audience. John Oak Dalton wants to tell a good story and he does that. I just wished he had a bigger budget and could have gotten a little better actors to carry the script. I am by no means disparaging the cast here. I'm just saying things could have been better.
Now for the DVD release. The film is presented in widescreen format in 1.78:1 aspect ratio and in 2.0 Audio. The film looks great for a low budget feature. The DVD also house bonus features of the film trailer and an audio commentary featuring Producer Henrique Couto and Writer / Director John Oak Dalton.
