No 4K? Here’s Why the High Society Blu-ray Still Delivers a Great Viewing Experience

In 1940 a trio of future Hollywood Legends would come together to put to screen a romantic comedy that would be forever regarded as one of the greatest romcoms ever. Of course I am talking about The Philadelphia Story

Just a short 16 years later in 1956 MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) decided to remake the classic, but with an interesting twist. They decided to hire two of the most popular crooners and a future princess and rename the films High Society.

Warner Archive Collection restored this classic musical in 4k and released it in UltraHD. But let's be honest here not every classic film fans has made that leap to UltraHD just yet! So, as a service were going to tell you how the stand-alone Blu-ray looks like!

Synopsis
Legendary Louis Armstrong as himself, plays his trumpet and narrates in prose and song the peccadillos of his songwriter friend C.K. Dexter Haven (Crosby), his beautiful perfectionist ex-wife Tracy Samantha Lord (Kelly, in her final film role), and her stuffy fiancee George Kittredge (John Lund). Sinatra and wise-cracking Celeste Holm are a scandal sheet reporter and photographer who arrive to cover the wedding and complicate the tangled romances. Armstrong and his composer buddy conspire musically and by other devious means to stop Tracy's marriage. Dexter wants her back, but she takes off with the magazine writer -- all of which gives everybody wonderful excuses to break into the incomparable songs of Cole Porter.

High Society has big shoes to fill here. As The Philadelphia Story is a truly beloved film! And while High Society may not hit the same crescendo as The Philadelphia Story, it in and of itself is an extremely entertaining musical, and let's be honest it is a classic in its own right.

The cast is just as great in High Society as it was in The Philadelphia Story. Grace Kelly stars in this film alongside Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, in her final film before she left Hollywood and become Princess of Monaco.

High Society has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in the original 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio. There are two English audio tracks a Dolby Atmos TruHD and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Warner Archive Collection's 4K restoration gives High Society a gorgeous look even in HD! The Technicolor print shines even in HD and the music flourishes in HD! But a beautiful print in HD isn't all this Blu-ray has going for it. Take a look at the bonus features included.

For me the addition of a classic Droopy cartoon, Newsreel, radio spots, trailers and a featurette takes this release from good to great! All these bonuses make this Blu-ray a true night at the theater from the comfort of your couch!

In all honesty if you have a 4K player, by all means purchase the 4K and get the full beauty of this restoration. But if you haven't upgraded to that just yet. You cannot go wrong with this Blu-ray. High Society looks amazing in HD as well!
