Johnny Weissmuller made his name first as an Olympic swimmer for the United States. He was one of the most decorated swimmers of his era. Johnny Weissmuller won five Olympic gold medals during the 1924 Paris Olympics and 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. He also won a bronze medal in water polo at the 1924 Paris Games.
After a successful career in the Olympics, Johnny Weissmuller would transition to acting in motion pictures. In 1932, he would start a series of films that would make him a star. MGM had him star as the legendary Tarzan. After Tarzan the Ape Man (1932), he would make his second of six performances as Tarzan with the 1934 film Tarzan and his Mate.
Now Warner Archive Collection has restored and released this adventure classic Tarzan and His Mate, on Blu-ray for the first time ever.
Synopsis: Tarzan has been living for several years with the Englishwoman Jane Parker, but now Jane's former fiance, Martin Arlington, comes to the jungle hoping to use her to find the legendary elephants' graveyard and its fabled treasure of ivory. Arlington's arrogance and greed, however, lead to his gruesome death. Now, Tarzan races across the jungle, calling his friends, the elephants, to help save Jane from the same grisly fate!
Most people agree that Tarzan and His Mate is the best of the Tarzan films. Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan have great screen chemistry. The second of the Tarzan films is a definite film triumph.
Warner Archive Collection has done something special with this release as well. They have restored this film not just in picture quality, but also restored the pre-code content. This sequel ramps up the action, adventure and romance, bringing audiences quite the thrilling adventure.
Warner Archive Collection has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio with side mattes. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Screening this film on this new Blu-ray there is no denying that the film has never looked better. The picture is sharp and clean. There is no signs of damage to this print that I could see. There was no dirt or debris no lines or scratches. The audio is clear with no hiss or pops. This is a tremendous looking blu-ray restoration.
Special features:
* Classic M-G-M shorts:
- The Spectacle Maker (1934) A fairy tale about a poor spectacle maker with a crippled son, who makes a magic pair of lenses which allow the viewer to see the true nature of what they're viewing.
- What Price Jazz (1934) A preacher, Mr. Blue Laws, and his ally Mr. Public Opinion, campaign against jazz.
* Original Theatrical Trailer.
Warner Archive Collection didn't give us cartoons for bonus features. Instead we two shorts. This is a nice little change of pace. I am fully in for more shorts being added to Blu-ray releases.
