Jack Benny is probably best known for his long-running TV show. But before he became synonymous with television, he was a radio and movie star. He starred in many movies during his early career. Many of which have been mostly forgotten over time.
Kino Lorber's KL Studio Classics has been releasing a lot of classic comedy films on Blu-ray over the last several years. But now it is time for Jack Benny to get his turn to shine. The new Blu-ray is a double feature of two of Jack Benny's early films from the 1930s.
Movie Rating:
****=Don’t Miss it!

*=You haven’t missed anything.
Artists and Models (1937) Mac Brewster (Jack Benny) is the owner of an advertising agency, which is in serious debt. The Townsend Silver contract could save the firm. So Mac is trying to find a model for the Artists and Models Ball. Paula (Ida Lupino) his girlfriend, poses as a society girl to win the role. But Mr. Townsend has other ideas. ***
Man About Town (1939) Producer Bob Temple (Jack Benny) has brought his show to London. He loves the star of the show, Diana (Dorothy Lamour), but she won't take him seriously as a lover. So to prove her wrong, he picks up a stranger, Lady Arlington. Before long, he finds himself in a hilarious love triangle. ***
These two Benny vehicles are highly entertaining musical comedies. Along with Jack Benny, there are some great singers and actors on this double feature, including Ida Lupino, Dorothy Lamour, Betty Grable, Gail Patrick, Martha Raye, Edward Arnold, Richard Arlene, Hedda Hopper, Binnie Barnes, Monty Woolley, and Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson.
Kino Lorber has transferred these films on one Blu-ray disc. Both films are in 1080p and presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio tracks are English-DTS-HD 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
These scans really bring out the gorgeous quality of the black and white picture and the wonderful film grain. As for the audio, aside from a couple of spots where the audio drops a bit in Artists and Models the audio is crisp and clean.
In addition to newly remastered picture quality, Kino Lorber added some bonus features to this release. Take a look at what is included.
* NEW Audio Commentary for ARTISTS AND MODELS by Film Historian Eddy Von Mueller
* NEW Audio Commentary for MAN ABOUT TOWN by Film Historians Paul Anthony Nelson and Lee Zachariah
* Theatrical Trailers (Newly Mastered in 2K - Both Films)
These audio commentaries are great listens. The film historians in these commentaries bring so much information. You would probably need to listen a couple time to digest all of the info.
