Duel to the Death Blu-ray Review (88 Films) – The Ultimate Martial Arts Showdown in HD

Ching Siu-tung is probably best known for directing his classic A Chinese Ghost Story. In 1983 he would direct a martial arts film that over the years would become an action classic. Of course, that film would be Duel to the Death.

88 Films has been releasing many classic Asian cinema releases for the past few years. Now it is time for Duel to the Death to get its super deluxe Blu-ray release. No kung fu film fans can revel in the greatness of this release.

Synopsis: Every ten years, a duel is held between the finest Japanese and Chinese martial artists to determine whose Swordmanship is superior. During the Ming Dynasty, as the next duel approaches, the chosen candidates are caught in the middle of a battle between Ninjas and Shaolin monks. Only a Duel to the Death will settle the countries' conflicts and stop the bloodshed.

Duel to the Death is a visual effects spectacle. The action is top-notch and the acting is great. I love the simplicity of the story, it makes it so easy to enjoy. Plus, the film is a fast-paced, action-packed flick that will have you on the edge of your seat.

88 Films has released this film on Blu-ray in 1080p and presented in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio tracks to choose from. First, there is the original Cantonese track with newly translated English subtitles or the English dub option. The English dub I truly enjoy!

88 Films has restored this kung fu classic in 2K from the original negative. What results is a very nice-looking picture with digital artifacts or audio anomalies found on this Blu-ray release. In addition to a wonderful new restoration, 88 Films adds some cool bonus features as well. Take a look at what is included.

Bonus Materials
* Audio Commentary with Asian Cinema Expert Frank Djeng
* Duel Identity – Archival interview with actor Norman Chui Siu-keung
* Flora Cheung on Duel to the Death – Archival interview with actress Flora Cheung

* Reconstructed Tai Seng Trailer
* Reversible Sleeve
* Booklet Insert entitled "When Bushido is pitted against Kung Fu, it has to be  Duel to the Death"

Frank Djeng does another good job of taking us behind the scenes of Asian cinema. Then the 2 bonus interviews are great and the booklet is a wonderful read. But before me is the artwork, where this release really shines.
