Deep Blue Sea (1999) 4k Review

In 1975 after the release of Jaws the world was terrified to go to the beach. Even more so filmmakers were inspired to make their own creature features. In 1999 almost 25 years after Jaws was released director Renny Harlin brought his shark feature 'Deep Blue Sea' to the big screen.

Now for the 26th anniversary of Deep Blue Sea Arrow Video has released a deluxe edition of this film on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray depending on which format you prefer.

SynopsisAt an isolated research facility in the middle of the ocean, a team of scientists, led by Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows), are working on a cure for Alzheimer's by genetically altering the brains of sharks. When a shark escapes and attacks a pleasure boat, the company sponsoring the research threatens to pull its funding and sends corporate executive Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) to investigate. McAlester has just 48 hours to prove the value of her work, but her experiments have made the sharks smarter. No longer happy to be injected, prodded, and caged, they begin to turn the tables. As a freak storm causes chaos on the surface, making it impossible to leave, the facility is flooded and the scientists must fight to survive against the rising water and the hungry sharks that now swim freely through the corridors.

Renny Harlin directed a smart, thrilling action-packed, suspense-filled, horror feature. The story is well formed, and dialogue is good. The acting is really good lead by the great Samuel L. Jackson. But there are also great performances by Saffron Burrows (Troy), Thomas Jane (The Punisher), Jacqueline McKenzie (Ruby's Choice), Michael Rapaport (The 6th Day), Stellan Skarsgård (Andor), LL Cool J (S.W.A.T.), Aida Turturro (The Sopranos), Cristos (Dexter) and Ronny Cox (RoboCop).

Arrow Video has transferred Deep Blue Sea to 4K in 2160p and is presented in 2.35:1. There are two audio options a DTS HD-Master Audio 5.1 and Dolby Atmos audio. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The 4k transfer is not just any transfer it features a brand new 4K restoration of the film from the original camera negatives by Arrow Films approved by director Renny Harlin. This is a crisp and clean restoration. The colors are simply stunning in 4K. But as always, a gorgeous transfer is not all that is included here. Arrow Video added some awesome bonus features as well.
