Blu-ray Review: Strawberry Blonde (1941)

James Cagney is probably best known for his tough guy roles. Roles in such films like, Angels with Dirty Faces, Each Dawn I Die, and Captain of the Clouds. All of these have received Blu-ray releases from the good folks at Warner Archive Collection.

Now it is time for more James Cagney Blu-rays from Warner Archive. This time around the 1941 romantic comedy entitled Strawberry Blonde co-starring Hollywood Legend Olivia De Havilland.

Biff Grimes (James Cagney) and Hugo Barnstead (Jack Carson) are both in love with the strawberry blonde Virginia Brush (Rita Hayworth). Despite Biff's efforts to win her heart, Virginia pushes her friend, Amy Lind (Olivia de Havilland), on him and elopes with Hugo. After Biff and Amy fall in love, Biff join Hugo's firm. But is it all truly happily ever after?!

Strawberry Blonde is a charming period piece from classic Hollywood. The acting is great! You would be hard pressed to call this James Cagney's greatest role, but it is defiantly up there as one of them... for sure. He really shines here as do all the actors and actress in this film!

Warner Archive has transferred Strawberry Blonde to Blu-ray in 1080p and presented in its original full screen format 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

I must say this new 4K scan of Strawberry Blonde is something special. This scan is taken from the original camera negative and it is simply stunning h0w beautiful it looks. It must be seen to be believed.

Warner Archive have been hitting home runs with these 4K scans, but that is not all that is included on this Blu-ray. They added some very cool bonus features. Look at what is included.

Screen Guild Playhouse (10/5/41) A live, radio version of the play The Strawberry Blonde with Cagney and De Havilland.

* Classic short: Polo with the stars: Buddy Rogers buys one of the ponies in training, and later uses him in a match where Jack Holt and Joe E. Brown are among the players. This short features an appearance by the great Edward G. Robinson.

* Theatrical Trailer

As a radio disc jockey I have a real love for radio programs. And I always enjoy when Warner Archive adds those classic radio programs to their Blu-ray releases. Than when they add short films and cartoons and a throw in a trailer. That makes a already impressive release all the more impressive.

If you are a fan of romantic comedy or James Cagney than Strawberry Blonde is on Blu-ray you are going to need in your collection. If you have a DVD copy you need to upgrade to this Blu-ray it is that great of a release. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
