Blu-ray Review: Shanghai Joe (1973)

Spaghetti Westerns and Kung Fu movies are literal cult genres. People love these kinds of films and to get a mash-up of the two genres in one film! Amazing! So in 1973 Mario Caiano brought us Shanghai Joe.

Cauldron films has been doing some amazing work for the fans of physical media. They have been bringing cult movie fans deluxe Blu-ray releases that they crave. Now this above mentioned mash-up Shanghai Joe is the next film to get a chance to shine on Blu-ray.

Chin Hao (Chen Lee/Myoshin Hayakawa), arrives in America looking for a better life, only to be faced with locals that don't take kindly to outsiders. Much to their surprise, Chin is not your average drifter as he rips his way through racist bad guys with his unstoppable fighting techniques. After word of his skills spreads, he gets a job at a ranch only to find that the owner, Stanley Spencer, is a cattle smuggling slave trader who brutalizes Mexican farmers and anyone else who dares get in his way. Chin ramps up the violence as he stops at nothing to free the slaves and enact revenge on the sadistic Spencer.

Now full disclosure here, I had never seen this film before, so I didn't have a feeling of nostalgia for this film. I just went in to watch this film and what an experience it was. The film reminds me a lot of the classic David Carradine TV series Kung Fu! Shanghai Joe runs 98 minutes and is a fast paced action packed film I will defiantly be re-watching this one.

Cauldron Films have transferred Shanghai Joe to Blu-ray in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This transfer is from a new 2K scan of the original negative. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is both the opinion for the original Italian audio with English subtitles or (the one I prefer myself) the English dubbed version.

So often when you watch spaghetti
westerns the quality is rough to say the least. The new 2K scan of Shanghai Joe is simply amazing. The picture is sharp and there is absolutely no signs of damage to this print. I was blown away by how great this film looks on Blu-ray. But a stunning looking transfer is not all that is on this Blu-ray. Take a look at the bonus feature.

The film is first off extremely entertaining! And than to see the film look as amazing as it does! Than bonuses of interviews, an essay and informative Commentary, and I love the reversible artwork! Just great stuff! Cauldron really deserves high praise for this release.
