Frank Russell Capra was an Italian-born American film director, producer and writer. Over his illustrious career he made films that have entertained generations of audiences.
Frank Capra was the youngest of seven children. When he was five his family immigrated to America. Capra's father worked as a fruit picker and young Capra sold newspapers after school for 10 years.
From humble beginnings Frank would climb the ranks of Hollywood to become a successful director. During his career he would be nominated for six Best Director Oscars and out of those nominations he would win the coveted trophy three times.
There are so many great Capra films during his career. But here is our Top 7 Capra films.
7. Meet John Doe (1941) A penniless drifter is recruited by a columnist to impersonate a man who said he'd be committing suicide as a protest, and a political movement begins.
6. Mr. Smith goes to Washington (1931) A naïve youth leader is appointed to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. His plans collide with corruption. He tries to forge ahead despite attacks on his character.
5. It Happened One Night (1934) A reporter trails a young runaway heiress for a big story. They end up stuck with each other when the bus leaves them behind at one of the stops.
4. Arsenic and Old Lace (1943) A writer of books on the uselessness of marriage risks all when he decides to tie the knot. Things go from bad to worse when he learns on his wedding day that his beloved maiden aunts are murderers.
3. Lost Horizon (1937) When a diplomat's plane crashes in the peaks of Tibet, he and the other survivors are guided to an isolated monastery at Shangri-La, where they wrestle with the invitation to stay.
2. Pocketful of Miracles (1961) A New York gangster and his girlfriend attempt to turn street beggar Apple Annie into a society lady.
1. It's A Wonderful Life (1946) An angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperate man by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.
On September 3, 1991 Frank Capra suffered a heart attack in his sleep and sadly died at the age of 94. But he left behind so many amazing films that have been enjoyed for generations and will continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.
