Where There's Life (1947) {KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Few comedians had the career of the legendary Bob Hope. He played vaudeville, starred in movie and radio and even thrilled audiences at home with his own TV show and specials. But probably what many remember and even respect him so much for was his time of entertaining the troops during times of war.

Kino Lorber under the division KL Studio Classics have released many Bob Hope films on Blu-ray. The most recent have been Nothing but the Truth, Caught in the Draft, My Favorite Blonde and Alias Jesse James. Now it's time for another Bob Hope classic to receive the Blu-ray treatment and that film is 1947's Where There's Life.

Michael Valentine (Bob Hope) is happy with his life as a successful radio show host in New York City and is set to marry his sweetheart, Hazel. But just when all seems to be right in his world it's about to be turned upside down.  After an apparent assassination of King Hubertus II of Barovia, Michael is the last known heir to the thrown. Now Michael must take up the crown, but first he must make it out of Manhattan alive as there is a secret society called the Mordia whos goal is to eliminate him. Plus avoid
 Hazel's tough policeman brother who wants answers to why he is running out on his sister.

Sidney Lanfield and Bob Hope are together for the 2nd of three times the first being 1942's My Favorite Blonde and the last being my favorite Hope film 1951's Lemon Drop Kid. I must say I am shocked that they didn't do more films together because in my opinion these two are gold together.

Where there'
s life is a fast paced action-packed fun little romp. Where there's life not only stars Bob Hope there is also another great comedian William Bendix as as policeman Victor O'Brien. Many may know him from the TV series Life of Riley, as Babe Ruth in The Babe Ruth Story or in Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat.

Now for this KL Studio Classics Blu-ray release.
Kino Lorber have transferred this Hope classic on Blu-ray in 1080p in it's original 1.37:1 aspect ratio with the soundtrack being a DTS Mono. When I compared this Blu-ray from the pervious released DVD version, this is a significant upgrade. The picture is crisp and the audio is clear. Hope looks great in HD.

Where There's Hope KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Still

Now for bonus features it is a bit lite, but there is a good bunch of Bib Hope Movie trailers. I am a sucker for trailers, so for me this is a nice bonus. The trailers included are, Where there's life, The Cat and the Canary, Road to Singapore, The Ghost Breakers, Road to Zanzibar, Caught in the Draft, Nothing but the Truth, My Favorite Blonde, Road to Morocco, Road to Utopia, The Paleface and Alias Jesse James.

So if you are a fan of Bob Hope like I am. This is pure Bob Hope fun you have come to know and love. And this nice looking transfer is something you are going to want to see. It is great to see King Bob Hope in HD. Head over to
