Song of the Thin Man (1947) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

William Powell and Myrna Loy starred in a series of mystery comedies based on a novel entitled The Thin Man. In this series they were Nick and Nora Charles married sleuths that find themselves constantly on the case.

Warner Archive have been giving this series of films Blu-ray releases. In all honesty I wasn't completely sure sales would merit the entire collection getting Blu-ray releases. But I am happy to say I was wrong. So now at long last the series is complete on Blu-ray with the release of The Song of The Thin Man.

Nick and Nora Charles are at a charity gambling benefit aboard the S.S. Fortune. The tables are hot, the jazz is hotter and the band leader's body is cold. Yes, with a murderer on the loose it is up to Nick and Nora to jump back in the saddle and find out who the culprit is.

This is a real solid film to end this series. William and Myrna are as good as ever as Nick and Nora. It is a true shame that this series ended here, but it ended on a high note rather than a clunker of a film.

Song of the Thin Man has an amazing cast in addition to Powell and Loy is a stellar supporting cast including, Keenan Wynn (Dr. Strangelove...), Dean Stockwell (Quantum Leap), Phillip Reed (Unknown Island), Patrica Morison (Song of Bernadette) Gloria Grahame (In A Loney Place), Jayne Meadows (Trixie on The Honeymooners) and Leon Ames (Tora! Tora! Tora!) just to name a few.

The film has been transferred in a 1080p in the original 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and included in English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This final installment of The Thin Man looks and sounds so impressive on Blu-ray. The picture is crisp and clean and the audio is clear. It is a great addition to this Blu-ray series.

Now in addition to a gorgeous transfer of this film. Warner Archive added some great bonuses to this Blu-ray disc. Take a look at what is included.

* M-G-M Passing Parade short “A Really Important Person”: Eight year old Billy Reilly (Dean Stockwell) is trying to find someone important to write about for an essay contest on a great person.

* Tex Avery Cartoon “Slap Happy Lion”: MGM cartoon shows the downfall of a lion from king of the jungle to a nervous wreck.
