Josie and the Pussycats (2001) {Mill Creek Entertainment Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Many grew up on Hanna-Barbera shows. They brought audiences some of the most iconic cartoons of all time. Just some include The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Smurfs and Scooby-Doo. But one of the cartoon series that fans loved was the adventures of Josie and the Pussycats.

These cartoons were so popular that many of them got live action movies. Well in 2001 fans would finally get to see their favorite all girls cartoon band get a live action treatment with Josie and the Pussycats. Now for the 20th Anniversary the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment are giving this film a Blu-ray release.

Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook), Melody (Tara Reid) and Val (Rosario Dawson) are a small-town band that have big dreams of being rock stars, but staying true to their style and sound. After the disappearance of the boy band sensation Dujour, they find themselves with a record deal. Their dreams have come true, they have fame and fortune, but soon uncover that they are just pawns of evil people who want to control the youth of America. Can the reveal the truth and clear their names? You'll have to see the film to find out!

The film initially received mixed reviews at best and ended up being a box office failure. Maybe it's we love films from our childhood. Maybe we just love those cheesy movies, but this film has become a cult classic.

Personally after re-watching this film so many years later and in HD no less. I enjoyed this movie even more than I remember. Rachael, Tara, and Rosario do such a great job capturing the spirit of these iconic cartoon characters. The supporting cast is a lot of fun as well, Carson Daily makes a special appearance, The boy band Dujour is helmed by Seth Green, Breckin Myers,
Donald Faison and Alexander Martin. And finally Parker Posey and Alan Cumming as the evil CEO of Mega Records and the manager.

The film has been transferred in 1080p in the original widescreen 1.85:1 aspect ratio with audio in a 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This transfer looks absolutely stunning! The colors are amazing and the audio really rock with this music.

The stunning transfer of this cult classic is not all that is included on this Blu-ray. Mill Creek Entertainment loaded this Blu-ray with awesome bonus features. Take a look at what is included on this 20th anniversary edition Blu-ray.
