Fury (1936) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Spencer Tracy was Oscar award winning actor. The first actor to win two consecutive Academy Awards. In his illustrious career he appeared in 75 films, and was considered by his fellow actors as one of the greatest actors.

Many have their favorite Tracy films, but in 1936 Spencer Tracy was directed by Fritz Lang (Metropolis) in a film noir entitled Fury. Now the good folks at Warner Archive have released this classic on Blu-ray for the first time ever.

Joe Wilson (Spencer Tracy) is a man wrongly accused of a horrific crime while on he was on his way to meet his fiancée, Katherine Grant (Sylvia Sidney). While being held at a local jail, a mob gathers and attacks. Joe is presumed dead after a massive fire, but he escaped. When the one responsible are not arrested Joe figures it's up to him to get revenge.

I think the thing about this film that is so almost prophetic is how much it feel like the climate of our world right now. I challenge the viewer to watch this film and not see the similarities.

The visionary of the silent classic Metropolis Fritz Lang is on full display here in his first American film. Now some might complain how 1930s films move a tad slow. Fury keeps the story rolling and there is hardly time to take a breath.

Spencer Tracy is shows a broad range of emotions as a condemned but innocent man. No wonder people consider him one of the greatest actors in film history. In addition the supporting cast is amazing as well; Sylvia Sidney (Sabotage), Edward Ellis (The Thin Man), Walter Brennan (The Real McCoys), Walter Abel (The Three Musketeers), Bruce Cabot (King Kong) and Frank Albertson (Rosie the Riveter).

The film has been transferred in 1080p from a new 4K scan. It is presented in it's original full screen format with the aspect ratio at 1.37:1. The audio is a Master Audio 2.0 with option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This transfer is amazing! The picture is crisp and clean with no signs of damage. And the audio is clear with little to no hiss.

Warner Archive have added a theatrical trailer and an Audio Commentary by Peter Bogdanovich that has an audio interview excerpt with director Fritz Lang. This is an amazing bonus feature and worth the price for its significance.
