Kino Lorber Studio Classics have been bringing some really cool westerns to Blu-ray. And this month is no different. This time around we look at the Blu-ray release of the 1971 western Shoot Out directed by Henry Hathaway.
Henry Hathaway was a prolific director, directing some really amazing films, but he is probably best known for directing westerns. Some of the more well known ones were, Rawhide (1951), How the west was won (1962), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), True Grit (1969)
A couple years after he worked on True Grit he would team up with producer Hal B. Wallis and screenwriter Marguerite Roberts for another western entitled Shoot Out starring Gregory Peck.
The film follows Clay Lomax (Gregory Peck), a gunfighter who is released from prison after serving a seven year in prison for robbing a bank. Here is in town to get revenge on his old partner Sam Foley (James Gregory), who shot him in the back and left him to be arrested. But before going after revenge he meets a passing train looking for a large sum of money from an lady companion, but instead he gets a a 7-year-old girl Decky Ortega (Dawn Lyn).
Clay will not let this 'little' problem keep him from his mission of revenge, even if he has to drag her along of the ride. But little does Clay realize he is being tracked by a trio of scummy gunfighters hired by Foley. Will Clay get the revenge he wants and what about the little girl. These questions are answered in this film. But I am not going to spoil it for you.
Gregory Peck is known for his good guy personas, but it was nice to see him in a little more gritty character here. The screenplay is a beautifully written western drama. And Henry Hathaway in his second to last film ever still proves he can bring an engaging and entertaining movie to audiences.
Now it is good to note that this film is a bit more of an adult western. Featuring some mild profanity and some brief nudity. The violence while intense at times is not bloody. So for audiences just be aware of these issues.
Now for this Blu-ray release, the film is presented in widescreen format 1.85:1 aspect ratio in 1920x1080p. The audio is DTS-HD Master 2.0. The film transfer is really impressive. The color palette really pops on the HD TV. There is no damage to this print, whatsoever. This really is a nice looking HD release.
Kino Lorber never gives the collector a bare bones Blu-ray, no way. They have included on this release an audio commentary by film critic Nick Pinkerton. Also trailers for this film Shoot Out, The Big Country, Billy Two Hats, Doc and Showdown.
I really enjoyed this Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. It is an entertaining, exciting, dramatic western that looks stellar on Blu-ray. Western movie fans are going to love the way this Blu-ray looks.
If you are a fan of Gregory Peck or 70s westerns, Kino Lorber Studio Classics Blu-ray of Shoot Out would make a beautiful addition to anyone's collection. You can head over to Amazon.com and order your copy today.
