Ghosts of Mars (2001)

John Carpenter has directed some cult classic films including, Halloween,
Assault on Precinct 13, The Thing, Big trouble in little China and Escape from New York, just to name a few.

In 2001 John Carpenter wrote and directed a sci-fi horror film entitled Ghosts of Mars. Now the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment are bringing us this John Carpenter's cult film on Blu-ray.

Ghosts of Mars takes place in the
2176 AD. Long colonized by human settlers, the Red Planet has become the manifest destiny of an over-populated Earth. 640,000 people now live and work at outposts all over Mars, mining the planet for its abundant natural resources. But one of those mining operations has uncovered a deadly mother lode: a long-dormant Martian civilization whose warriors, now unleashed and apparently unstoppable, are systematically taking over the bodies of human intruders, bent on ridding the planet of the invaders from Earth.

Lt. Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge), a veteran of two years on the Martian Police Force, is on transport assignment to Shining Canyon to bring James “Desolation” Williams (Ice Cube), the planet’s most notorious criminal, to justice. Williams has no plans to make Ballard’s job easy and what begins as a battle of force and wits between cop and criminal soon turns into something more fundamental: a battle for human survival.

When John Carpenter is on, his writing and film direction is tops. But sadly Ghosts of Mars is not quite his best. The story can be a bit confusing at times. If your not paying attention you can get lost in the plot.

As for the action sequences are great. The acting is not bad. Ice Cube as the baddie is so good. Even the special effects are very well done.

The story may be a bit confusing at times, but no doubt there are people who love this film. After all that's what makes films so cool. What I love you may hate. And what I loath you may adore.

It is good to note this film is extremely adult. The profanity and violence is heavy. There is also sexual content and drug use. So this is by not means for the kids.

Now for the Blu-ray release itself! The film is presented in 2.35:1 HD widescreen format and DTS-HD Master audio 5.1. It looks and sounds crystal clear. The colors are bright, the image is sharp.

Now for bonus features. Mill Creek Entertainment went above and beyond with this release. There is an audio commentary with John Carpenter and Natasha Henstridge. There is also Video diary: Red Desert Nights, a featurette "Scoring Ghosts of Mars", and Special effects (SPX) Deconstruction.

So if your a fan of John Carpenter films this one is a must add to your collection. Head over to DeepDiscount.com and order your copy today!
