Mortuary (2005)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

We are coming upon the two year anniversary of the passing of director Tobe Hooper. Three of his films I consider near masterpieces in horror, Texas chainsaw massacre,
Poltergeist and Salem's Lot.

In 2005 Tobe Hooper took to the director's chair once again, this time to bring us a supernatural horror tale that takes place in one of the scariest places possible, a graveyard.

MVD Visual's Marquee collection label is bringing us a special addition if this Tobe Hooper horror on blu-ray. Let's take a look at what is included in this release.

The film follows the Doyle family who move to the
small town of Santa Loraina, California. The abandoned Fowler Funeral Home has become a local horror legend and Leslie Doyle has moved with her son and daughter to reopen it. Little do they know the legend of Bobby Fowler a hideously disfigured abused young man is a little more real than anyone knows. As evil begins to engulf the house taking over no one is safe. Can anyone survive the evil? You'll have to watch the film to find out.

As you can tell from this synopsis this film is a bit of a hodgepodge of ideas all together. I think the story idea is good, but it something felt off to me! I know Tobe Hooper can direct some amazing movies, this one is not one of them! Denise Crosby is a great lead as the matriarch of the family in this film. But she can't save a bad movie! Even if she was in one of my all time favorite horror films "The Original" Pet Semetary.

There is a lot of irritating characters and the CGI is not the greatest here! I think they would have been better to go with practical effects. It would have made the film seem a little more real! At least in my opinion.

While this film is not Tobe Hooper's best, it no doubt has it's fans! So what does this blu-ray release offer?! In the blu-ray release the film is presented in 1.78:1 widescreen format and 5.1 Dolby digital and 2.0 Stereo. It looks and sounds pretty impressive!

Now for bonus features, there is English subtitles for the hearing impaired. We also get an Audio commentary by director Tobe Hooper, a near hour long behind the scenes featurette and Theatrical trailer.

While the film may not be great this blu-ray is loaded with extras, that is what makes this a buy in my opinion. So if your a fan of Tobe Hooper films, and are looking to add this film to your collection, I recommend this release!. You can order the blu-ray by going to MVDShop.com.
