The Navigator A Medieval Odyssey (1988) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason S. Lockard

Vincent Ward's directorial debut was the film Vigil. Four years later brought us The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey. Now Arrow Video who just released Vigil about a month ago is now releasing a special collectors edition of The Navigator on Blu-ray.

The film follows a young 14th Century boy with acute psychic powers. During the period of the Black Death, Hamish believes that he can rescue his fellow villagers by leading them into an abandoned mine. The fugitives tunnel their way through the darkness and emerge on the other side--into a bustling New Zealand metropolis in the year 1988.

This is an art-house / time travel film and it is going to have sci-fi fans screaming for more. And with this blu-ray release your going to get more! The film may be a bit hard to follow for some viewers because the accents of the actors can make the dialog a bit hard to understand. The story is good and the cinematography is beautiful! All in all it is a really fun little film!

For the Blu-ray release not only do you get the film in High Definition with the original mono uncompressed audio and English subtitles for deaf and hard-of-hearing. But there is nice amount of bonus features including,
• Brand-new appreciation by film critic Nick Roddick, recorded exclusively for this release
• Kaleidoscope: Vincent Ward – Film Maker, a 1989 documentary profile of the director made for New Zealand television
• Theatrical trailer

Also if you are lucky enough to get one of the first pressing of this release you'll receive an Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Kim Newman and an introduction by Vincent Ward.

What an amazing little Blu-ray release! So if your a sci-fi fan, art-house fan or a fan of Vincent Ward this is an absolute must own on Blu-ray! Head over to MVDShop.com or Amazon.com and pick up a copy today!
