Badland (2007) Blu-ray Review | A Powerful Yet Divisive Iraq War Drama on Blu-ray

Some films, for one reason or another, just vanish from the scene. More often than not, this is not because the film is a bad film. They just don't have the lasting appeal. One such film is 2007's Badlands.

MVD Visual has rescued this dramatic film from obscurity and have given it a Blu-ray release it so richly deserves. Now almost 20 years after it's original release a whole new audience can discover this film in HD.

Synopsis: After serving in Iraq, reservist Jerry Rice (Jamie Draven) returns home to a life in ruins: a dead-end job at a rural gas station, a failing marriage to Nora (Vinessa Shaw), and a mind poisoned by the horrors of Fallujah. When his ruthless boss falsely accuses him of theft, Jerry's fragile psyche shatters. In a moment of madness, his family is destroyed; only his eight-year-old daughter, Celina (Grace Caroline Currey), survives. Jerry is desperate, so he takes his daughter and goes on the run.

Badlands is a raw and real film about what war veterans have to fight even after their tour of duty is over. The battle really never ends. Jamie Draven gives quite a performance and Grace Caroline Currey (even at her young age) will have the hardest-hearted person shedding a tear.

The story is an emotionally driven one. This film is rated R and, understandably, there is quite a bit of harsh adult language, so viewer beware. Also the film runs almost 2 and a half hours long. That was a little bit much for a heart-wrenching and emotional cinematic experience.

MVD has transferred Badland to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are English audio tracks in 5.1 Surround and 2.0 Audio. There is also the option for English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This transfer is from a brand new master from the 35mm Original Camera Negative. What results is a crisp and clean transfer. When screening this film I only witnessed two imperfections. One was a line at the bottom of the picture at one point. And a fairly load audio squeal during the dialogue. But other than that this is a pretty impressive transfer.

Now MVD didn't just throw a movie on a disc. No way! They added a lot of cool bonus features to this Blu-ray release. Take a look at what is included.

Bonus Materials
* Francesco Lucente (Director) and Carlo Varini (Cinematographer) Audio Commentary
* English Trailer
* German Trailer
* Jamie Draven Interview
* Joe Morton Interview
* Joe Morton Music Video 'Devils Lonely Fire'
* Grace Fulton Audition
* Cast / Crew Epk 1
* Cast / Crew Epk 2
* Makeup VFX Documentary
* Music Epk
* Delete Motel Scene
* Deleted News Report Scene
* Soundtrack CD

All the interviews, documentary, music video commentary and the addition of the Soundtrack CD. Now that is a very cool bonus feature. Especially if you love music. The soundtrack is a great bonus feature. Kudos to MVD for doing that.

Badland is an emotional rollercoaster ride. When the credits roll you will know you have watched a dramatically charged film. It is definitely a film I would suggest everyone see at least once. It will give you a different perspective on a soldier.
