Westerns are a very niche genre of films. Not everyone loves them. And while they are not my absolute favorite genre, I do respect these films and there are a few that I consider among my favorite films.
One such film is Clint Eastwood's Hang 'Em High. I remember as a young teenager coming home from school with my homework and turning on the TV (like I always would), and doing homework while the TV was on. Well, this specific day, there was a western on Hang 'Em High. I became so enthralled with the story that homework was pushed aside.
Since than I have watched this film several times and it never gets old. Well, I was excited to hear that Kino Lorber was releasing Hang 'Em High on 4K UltraHD. Now I can see this classic western in best quality possible.
Synopsis: They riddled him with bullets. They strung him up. They left him to die. But they made two fatal mistakes: they hanged the wrong man...and they didn’t finish the job. In his first American-made Western, Clint Eastwood indelibly carves his niche as the quintessential tough guy—cool-headed, iron-willed and unrelenting in his pursuit of revenge. Oklahoma, 1873. Jed Cooper (Eastwood), mistaken for a rustler and killer, is lynched on the spot by crooked lawman Captain Wilson (Ed Begley) and a rampaging band of vigilantes. But as Wilson and his gang flee the scene, there’s one very important detail they’ve overlooked: Cooper is still alive! Out for justice—and vengeance—Cooper takes on the job of deputy marshal…and, one by one, tracks down the nine men who “done him wrong.”
Clint Eastwood did a lot of great westerns during his illustrious career. But for me the best is Hang 'Em High. The story has a perfect pace the acting across the board is stellar. And the cinematography is second to none.
Kino Lorber has transferred this classic to 4K and Bu-ray for this release. They are in 2160p and 1080p respectively and are presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are English audio tracks in 5.1 Surround and Lossless 2.0 Audio. There is also the option for English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
This transfer is from a brand new HDR/Dolby Vision Master – From a 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative. What results is one of the best viewing experiences I have had of Hang 'Em High. The picture is crisp and clean and the audio is clear as a bell. The colors are correct. Kino Lorber has done a tremendous job with this 4k. But they added some nice bonus features to this two-disc set as well. take a look at what is included.
