The Running Man (2025) 4K UHD SteelBook Review – Edgar Wright’s Dystopian Reboot Gets the Collector’s Treatment

Almost four decades after Arnold Schwarzenegger put on his sneakers and went on the run in the killer game show. The novel by Stephen King (writing as Richard Bachman) is brought into a new generation with the 2025 film release of The Running Man.

Edgar Wright's dystopian spectacle is now roaring into the UltraHD arena. But this time it's for physical media fans. Will this new deluxe Steelbook release be worth picking up for your collection? We will find out.

Synopsis: In a not-too-distant future, Ben Richards (Glen Powell) was desperate to help his gravely ill infant daughter, and signed on for the hot media phenomenon of the moment: A billion-dollar cash prize game show that required him to spend 30 days successfully dodging highly trained assassins (and anyone else of a mind to) trying to kill him.

When you compare the two versions of this film, there is no denying that the 2025 version is more faithful to the Stephen King novel. But I must confess that 1987's version is a much more fun cinematic experience.

Edgar Wright creates a wild and crazy dystopian future. One thing about this film is its almost non-stop action. The film hits the ground running (pun intended) and rarely slows up. Glen Powell brings a real lightheartedness to Ben Richards. And there are great performances by Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, Michael Cera, William H. Macy, Lee Pace.

The Running Man has been transferred to 4K in 2160p and is presented in 2.39:1 aspect ratio. There are several audio tracks to choose from. There is an English Dolby Atmos, a French (Canada): Dolby Digital 5.1, a French: Dolby Digital 5.1, a Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 and finally there is an Audio descriptive track. There are also subtitles in English, English SDH, French and Spanish.

The Running Man looks spectacular in 4K UltraHD. The picture is crisp and clean with no signs of digital artifacts. The audio track is clear as a bell. making it easy to hear all the conversations. Even the Blu-ray looks good. In addition to the film on 4k and Blu-ray. There are some really nice bonus features included.

Personally, I love the featurettes. I always find these so awesome to see behind the camera and see how they made the film. The commentary is a great addition as well, with the writers director and star taking us on this journey through this futuristic world.

Finally, there is a bonus Blu-ray disc and a digital copy of The Running Man that you can add to your Fandango at Home account. This will allow you to have access to this film wherever you have an internet connection. I always find this a nice bonus.

Like a lot of physical media collectors, I enjoy a good Steelbook. They are sturdy and look amazing on the shelf. What we see is not the original artwork. The original artwork was a little too busy. I like this more subdued artwork more. It's still not spectacular, but it is nice.

Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment put together a nice little Steelbook of the reboot of The Running Man.
