During the holiday season, everyone has their favorite films to watch. Of course, I have plenty that I love to watch every year, but one of my favorites each year would have to be The Man Who Came to Dinner. Based on the stage production, it stars Monty Wooley.
Warner Archive Collection, in a kind of weird move to me have restored and released this film on Blu-ray now in March. We have passed the holidays, so why now? Granted, I am not complaining, as anytime we get a Blu-ray upgrade, it's a good thing. I'm just a little perplexed at the timing.
Synopsis: Famed author Sheridan Whiteside possesses a tongue dipped in venom and a brain that can crack The New York Times crossword puzzle in four minutes. On a lecture tour in Ohio, he slips on the ice and is confined to the home of a bourgeois couple. He proceeds to plunge the household into chaos, ruling the place like a czar and meddling in everyone's love life.
The screenplay is perfectly timed. Running almost 2 hours, you would never know it, as the time flies with the fast-paced story and the witty dialogue. Monty Wooley embodies everything that is Sheridan Whiteside. That snarky better-than-thou attitude. He is so much fun to watch. Then there is the rest of the cast lead by the legendary Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan, the simply hilarious Jimmy Durante, Richard Travis, and Billie Burke.
Warner Archive Collection has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Warner Archive Collection has done yet another wonderful job in restoring this film. The black and white picture is simply gorgeous. This new restoration really brings new life to this holiday classic. I am really going to enjoy revisiting this film yet again this holiday season in high definition.
Now in addition to this wonderful new restoration of this film, Warner Archive Collection has added some great bonus features to take this Blu-ray to a whole new level. Take a look at what is included on this Blu-ray.
