Archibald Alec Leach that is not a name that screams Hollywood. But switch it up to Cary Grant. Yeah, now that's a name that will work. Once Cary Grant first burst on the silver screen in the film This is the Night, you knew he was destined for greatness.
Universal Home Entertainment is giving an early Cary Grant film the Blu-ray treatment. That film is 1933's Gambling Ship. Let's take a look at what this film looks like on Blu-ray.
Synopsis: Weary Chicago Racketeer Ace Corbin (Cary Grant) and Eleanor Le Velle (Benita Hume), the mistress of infamous gambling ship operator Joe Burke (Arthur Vinton), put their troubled past behind on the train bound to New York. With their identities concealed, the two fall madly in love. A disastrous combination results when Ace makes efforts to purchase the debt-ridden gambling ship from Joer and steals the gambling trade of his old enemy and gangster Pete Manning (Jack La Rue)
Gambling Ship is a soild 30s gangster film. Its a typical pre-code film. Nothing overly spectacular, just a solid story. Cary Grant while still early in his career, you can see his has star written all over him. He really shines. The rest of the cast is good. The film is entertaining, but you probably wont stay with you after it ends.
Universal Pictures has transferred Gambling Ship to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Like many of the other Universal Blu-rays, this looks to be a film that has received no restoration whatsoever. It still looks okay, but nothing to write home about. And as for bonus features. There is not one bonus feature to be found on this disc.
While entertaining, this Blu-ray of Gambling Ship does not add much to make me feel that this is a must add to a home video library, unless you are a huge fan of Cary Grant.
If you are a huge Cary Grant fan and would like to add this Blu-ray to your Grant collection. You can order a copy of Universal's Blu-ray of Gambling Ship by heading over to MovieZyng or Amazon today.
