Clark Gable and Lana Turner starred together in four films during their illustrious careers. Somewhere I’ll Find You (1942), Homecoming (1948) and Betrayed (1954). But it all had to start somewhere. So where did it start? It all started in 1941 in a little town in Nevada at a bar called Honky Tonk.
Warner Archive Collection has been releasing so many classic Clark Gable films, so why not another? And why not the first Gable/Turner team-up. The Blu-ray of Honky Tonk features a brand new restoration and cool bonus features. Let's take a look at what is included in this release.
Synopsis: Con artist Candy Johnson (Gable) has been run out of town after town. Then he got wise. He went out and got a town of his own - Yellow Creek, Nevada. Lana Turner opposite Gable in this sometimes comic, always terrific Western. The title honky tonk is the Square Deal Saloon, where Candy and poker-playing side-kick Sniper (Chill Wills) cut cards but not the liquor. The colorful townsfolk include a Justice of the Peace (Frank Morgan), a long-suffering dancehall girl (Claire Trevor), and a low-unto-himself Sheriff (Albert Dekker).
The screenplay is a well-crafted tale that is filled with humor, drama, love and loss. The on-screen chemistry of Clark Gable and Lana Turner is simply undeniable. And what can you say about Chill Wills that hasn't been said 1000 times. He is an unforgettable character. And speaking of unforgettable characters. Honly Tonk also boasts of a performance of Marjorie Main (Ma Kettle). This is a great western adventure
Warner Archive Collection has transferred Honky Tonk to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Here is yet another time Warner Archive Collection has restored a classic film and made it look simply spectacular. The black and white picture is crisp and clean and the audio is clear. There is no specks or dirt and no hiss or pops in the audio track.
* Classic Tom and Jerry cartoon The Midnight Snack
* Classic Our Gang Comedy Short Fightin' Fools
* Lux Radio Theater broadcast with Lana Turner and John Hodiak
* Original Theatrical Trailer
The addition of the radio drama and the cartoon is great. But I really like that they added a classic Our Gang comedy on this release. That is very cool. Warner Archive Collection really adds cool bonuses to make there releases like a night at the theater.
