When you think of classic military sitcoms, several probably come to mind, Gomer Pyle USMC, The Phil Silvers Show aka Sgt Bilko, and McHale's Navy. McHale's Navy has an all-star cast of serious actors and hilarious comedians. The series was led by Academy Award Winning actor Ernest Borgnine and supported by the iconic star of the Carol Burnett Show, Tim Conway.

During the successful series run producers saw the opportunity to do a theatrical McHale's Navy release and in 1964 McHale's Navy headed to the big screen. Now what made this so different was this movie was shot in color where the TV series was in black and white. So, fans of McHale's Navy could finally see McHale's crew in glorious color.

It is hard to believe that this film just saw its 60the anniversary. So, for that epic anniversary it's time to let people rediscover the fun of the whole gang of the PT-73 with McHale's Navy with this new re-release DVD!

SynopsisRide along with Lieutenant Quinton McHale and his crew of military misfits as they take to the high seas and kick up waves of laughter in McHale's Navy, a feature-length comedy inspired by the ever-popular classic television series. The fun begins when McHale (Ernest Borgnine) and the crew of the PT-73 conspire to recreate the Australian Derby on a South Pacific island in order to save a struggling orphanage. The plan backfires and they find themselves in debt while McHale's bumbling second in command (Tim Conway) goofs his way into thousands of dollars more in damages. McHale and the boys concoct a scheme to pay off everybody, but there is just one problem: the no-nonsense Captain Binghamton (Joe Flynn) is wise to their scheme and determined to present McHale with a court-martial!

McHale’s Navy is a fun time capsule of 1960s humor — light, silly, and family-friendly. The film is just what you would expect. It's basically just a long running episode of McHale's Navy. Now that a bad thing. They didn't try to recreate the wheel here.

The chemistry between Borgnine and Tim Conway (Ensign Parker) carries over well from the series. All your favorite characters are present in this film. But look for a performance by a future Acadamy Award winning actor George Kennedy.

Universal Home Entertainment has re-released this film on DVD. The film is transferred in Anamorphic Widescreen format and presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono track. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This transfer is really nice. The picture is clean with no signs of damage to the print. But in all honesty, this is a re-release of the previous DVD release. The same transfer on that release is found on this one. Now I had high hopes that this would be an epic release with bonus features, but alas it is a literally copy of the previous DVD release. There are no bonus features. No trailer, featurettes, nothing.

The McHale’s Navy (1964) DVD is a no-frills release. If you love the TV series this movie will be an enjoyable experience. But if you already have the previous Universal DVD release don't waste your money there is no upgrade in picture or bonus features. It's the same bare bones DVD release. If you would like a copy of the McHale's Navy DVD, head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
