Wan Pipel (1976) Blu-ray Review

Cult Epics is a label that have been releasing all kinds of films on Blu-ray. Almost every genre gets a Blu-ray release. We have been lucky to get to review some of these releases. If I had to pick one of my favorites it would probably be AmnesiA.

Coming to Blu-ray May 27th, 2025 is the next Cult Epic Blu-ray, and that one is Wan Pipel. This film would be the final film production of the Surinamese film company Scorpio Films. So this Blu-ray is more historic than may even realize.

Synopsis: A love story between a Suriname man (Borger Breeveld), his Dutch girlfriend (Willeke van Ammelrooy), and an Indian girl (Diana Gangaram Panday), that breaks all color, race, and religious barriers.

Wan Pipel was directed by Pim de la Parra and is considered by most film fans to be his greatest work! There was a lot of social changes coming to the world in the 60s and 70s and many were not ready for those changes. One of the best films to spearhead those changes was the film Guess who's coming to Dinner and while Wan Pipel was made 7 years later you can see how this films must and been inspired by that Sidney Poitier film.

Cult Epics have given this film a Blu-ray release for the first time ever. The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.66:1 aspect ratio. There are two Dutch/Surname audio options a LPCM 2.0 mono and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There are also English subtitle options.

Now this isn't just any Blu-ray transfer. This transfer is taken from a new restored 2K transfer. As this was my first time seeing this film, honestly, I cannot compare it to anything else. But I can tell you I was extremely impressed with the picture quality. The film looks crisp and clean and there are no signs of damage to the print that I noticed.

Now a wonderful looking film transfer is not all that is included on this Blu-ray release. Cult Epics goes all in to make there releases something special and this one is no different. Take a look at what is includes on this release.

* Audio Commentary by film historian Lex Veerkamp and Bodil de la Parra

* Introduction by Pim de la Parra (2020)

* Bonus short film Aah… Tamara (1965)

The addition of an audio commentary by the daughter of director Pim de la Parra is a great thing. And also having Pim
de la Parra's first 35mm film Aah...Tamara is a tremendous bonus. And of course you know I love artwork well, Cult Epics has three different pieces of artwork. The slipcover and the reversible Blu-ray insert with two completely different pieces of artwork. 3 in total. This is just great!

So if you love foreign film from the 70s this new deluxe Blu-ray release of Wan Pipel is a must own for film fans. Head over to MVD Shop or Amazon and order your copy today. You won't be disappointed!

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) the Blu-ray of Wan Pipel receives......
