Eureka (1983) Blu-ray Review

Gene Hackman is an icon in motion pictures. His performances in such classic films as The Poseidon Adventure, The French Connection, Hoosiers and as Lex Luthor in Superman. These performances will never be forgotten. They will live forever.

But through the years he starred in many amazing films. In 1983 he starred alongside Theresa Russell, Mickey Rourke and Rutger Hauer for a psychological drama entitled Eureka. Now MGM home video is giving physical media fans a chance to one this film on Blu-ray!

In 1925, a gold prospector (Gene Hackman) strikes it rich beyond his wildest dreams. But twenty years later, arrogant and abusive, he's obsessed with the motives of those around him and suspects that even his own family could be plotting his demise!

Eureka was an ambitious film costing $11 Million and was filmed in several locations including England, the United States, Canada, and Jamaica. The film has the star power and a great premise that just doesn't quite seem to hit the right notes. But it is beautifully shot!

The film contains graphic violence so in it's initial release in the US it was given an X rating! Though still rough it's kind of calm in this generation, with the kind of films we have be desensitized to! The X rating didn't help that the film became a Box office bomb only making $123,572.

I don't want to discourage people from seeing this film. It's not a bad film. It is a bit disjointed and that makes the film suffer. Gene Hackman is tremendous as a man who strikes it rich and then slowly goes mad. Also look for Joe Pesci in this film get a few years after he burst on the film seen as Joey LaMotta in Raging Bull!

Now MGM has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HS Master Audio 2.0. There is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This film transfer looks and sounds great. There is no damage to this film print that I could see and the audio sound clear with no hiss or pops. A tremendous looking transfer! But as for bonus features. There are none. That is a shame. I would have love to seen an audio commentary, interviews, something.

Even though this film was panned by critics and people may not see the merit in the film. I think this film has something important to say. Money doesn't buy happiness!

So if you are a fan of Gene Hackman this is one performance you need to see. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy of Eureka today!
