Blu-ray Review: Secret of the Incas (1954)

Before Harrison Ford donned the fedora for the Indiana Jones adventures Charlton Heston put on the fedora and went on an adventure all his own in search for an Inca treasure, in 1954's Secret of the Incas.

Now Kino Lorber under the division KL Studio Classics are giving this 50s cult classic a chance to shine on Blu-ray. And it even features a brand new 4K, but how does it look? Let's find out!

Harry Steele (Charlton Heston, Planet of the Apes, Touch of Evil) earns a living as a tour guide in the jungles of Peru. But he has bigger plans for himself. He plans on making a fortune finding the Sunburst, an ancient Incan treasure that holds an awesome power. While on his quest he is confronted by cutthroat Ed Morgan (Thomas Mitchell, Alias Nick Beal), archeologist Stanley Moorehead (Robert Young, Father Knows Best) and beautiful Romanian refugee Elena Antonescu (Nicole Maurey, The Day of the Triffids).

Secret of the Incas is a wonderful mix of adventure, drama and romance. The production quality is pretty impressive for the 1950s. Charlton Heston while not his best role, he is pretty good as the Harry Steele. The supporting cast seen above in great, but there is also
Glenda Farrell (Little Caesar, I am a fugitive from a chain gang, Mystery of the Wax Museum), Michael Pate (Hondo), Leon Askin (Hogan's Heroes), William Henry (The Alamo), Marion Ross (Happy Days), Alvy Moore (Green Acres) and a rare film appearance by Peruvian singer Yma Sumac. A great cast!

The film is presented in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio the audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Now this film features a transfer of a new remastered version of this film. The new 4K Scan of the 35mm Original camera negative thanks to Paramount Pictures.

The new 4K scan makes this film look stunningly vibrant. The colors pop off the screen and the picture is crisp and for the most part clean. There is very minor specks of dirt in the picture, but it is so minor most viewers will not even notice it! The audio is clear with no signs of hiss or pops. This transfer is remarkably gorgeous. But a gorgeous looking transfer is not all that is included on this Blu-ray. Take a look at what is included.

Special Features:

* NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Toby Roan

* Trailers
Touch of Evil, The Big Country, Night Passage, Thunder Bay, Against All Flags, Naked Alibi

* A very cool comic book style slipcover

So as you can see there are some nice bonuses! And while not heavy on bonus features, the quality of the transfer makes up for it! And
 admittedly Charlton Heston is no Indiana Jones. But it is unfair to even compare him to Harrison Ford. It is also unfair to compare this films to the Indiana Jones films. This is an adventure film all it's own. And a nice film it is!

So if you are a fan of Charlton Heston, Indiana Jones or Adventure films Secret of the Incas is one film you may want to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
