Blu-ray Review: Fill'er Up with Super (1976)

Road movies are a lot of fun. My favorites have always been the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby series. But who didn't love Around The World in 80 days, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Smokey and the Bandit, Dumb and Dumber. But American road trip movies are not the only ones. in 1976 the French language road trip movie Fill'er Up With Super.

Radiance Films released an amazing deluxe edition Blu-ray of The Big Time Gambling Boss. But now it is time for another deluxe Blu-ray release and what better one to do that a road movie. So Fill'er Up With Super is on deck.

Klouk (Bernard Crombey) is a car salesman who has to miss a family holiday to deliver a luxury Chevrolet station wagon to his boss' wealthy client. He decides to take his friend Philippe (Xavier Saint-Macary) along with him for the ride across the length of France from Lille to the Cote d'Azur. On the way they give a lift to hitchhiker Charles (Etienne Chicot) who also brings along his friend Daniel (Patrick Bouchitey).

Fill'er Up With Super is a buddy road film with really strong acting by all the actors. Made on a shoestring budget, the production quality is better than you would expect. But the humor is from a different era. The dialogue can feels a bit insensitive, especially when watching it in this generation. There is a lot of sexual dialogue and some nudity. So viewers should be aware of this before going into this film.

Fill’er Up With Super arrives on Blu-ray from Radiance Films. It is presented in 1080p in widescreen format in the film's original aspect ratio of 1.66.1.  The film transfer is from a new 2k restoration. The audio is a French language 24-bit LPCM 2.0 mix with optional subtitles provided in English only.

The 2K restoration looks and sounds extremely impressive. The picture is crisp and clean with no signs of damage and the audio is clear as a bell. Fans of 70s foreign films will be happy with this new restoration. But that is not all that is included in this release. Radiance Films added some cool bonuses to this Blu-ray release. Take a look at what is included.

* Three interview short films with the cast directed by Cavalier:
My Wife Lives in Fear, with Etienne Chicot (2011, 4 mins)
It's Full, with Bernard Crombey (2011, 6 mins)
The King of Baby Bottles, with Patrick Bouchitey (2011, 8 mins)

* Friends First and Foremost: An interview with Bernard Crombey - in this video interview the star discusses his work on the film, his collaborators and his career (2019, 28 mins)

* An appreciation of Fill 'Er Up with Super by Cahiers du Cinema deputy editor Charlotte Garson

I must say that Radiance Films made another amazing again release for fans of 70s foreign films. A great looking 2K restoration, nice on disc bonus features and finally the booklet is filled with great material complete with pictures.
Fill'er Up With Super is an interesting film to say the least. It is part comedy, part drama, but the offensive material makes it viewing for select audiences.

So if you are not offended by the things found in this film, Fill'er Up With Super may be a film you would want to add to your collection. You can head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
